23 years ago today I was heading from my home outside Detroit, Michigan to spend the weekend attending a College Ski Trip at Blue Mountain, Ontario. First thing was to stop at a Student's house to pick up a Couple of Students to save on Gas. As I got to the house one of the students ran out and said "You're just in time, they're about to launch the Space Shuttle! As I entered the house it happened, the Challenger blew apart before my eyes!Shocked

The Ski Weekend went off as planned, but the Disaster cast a pall overe the event. I missed a Welcome Party that had been staged by the Ski Resort so I could see the Coverage on TV. (One of the Eyewitnesses at the Cape was the man who filmed the Hindenburg Disaster in the 1930s). Anyhow I'd like to know, where were you when the Space Shuttle blew up?

Where will you be when the lights go out on August 21st?

I was doing a service call (I think on a washing machine) in an unknown (at this point ) town.

I remember coming up from the basement and seeing the replay on my customer's 15' color TV screen.

I only say replay because I highly doubt that I just happened to see it at the exact moment it actually happened.

A group of us were standing in a parking lot behind Tampa International Airport, watching the launch. We, of course, could only see the exhaust trail from roughly 100 miles away.
It was a VERY clear day; it became apparent something went horribly wrong. I remember seeing that, turning around and walking away.

I was in first grade. I remember our teacher making an announcement to the class about the disaster. We were so shocked. I remember her saying something about one of the astronauts being a former teacher - it's funny how specific things really stick out about events like this.

I, too, was in first grade when it happened. I remember reading about this particular space mission in newspapers weeks before it happened and rooting for Christa McAuliffe, the "teacher in space".

It was sometime after lunch (around 1:00 PM) when the principal came back from leaving the building, removed the screen that separated the Kindergarten and first grade classes (it was a small private school with only one of each grade) and said that something terrible had happened. He asked if anyone knew anything about the space shuttle mission and if anyone knew how many astronauts were aboard. I raised my hand and said seven. He said yes and then told us about the explosion.

I remember it getting very quiet after he reported it. The rest of the day was a blur but when I got home, it was the only thing on the TV. They kept replaying the explosion and that was a really scary thing for a six year old to view, especially one who was afraid of the news for this very reason. My mother didn't go to work that day and as soon as I got home, I ran to her and clung to her because I was sad and scared.

God, I hate people who do that!Angry

I was in sixth grade. We weren't watching on TV (I think that launch was the first one that was shown only on CNN and not the regular channels...at least until the bulletins came in.), so we didn't even know about it at first.

The principal came in with a very somber expression, handed our teacher a note, and left without a word. The teacher told us it was 'bad news' and turned on the TV, where Dan Rather was making the announcement.
School went on as normal, so it wasn't like 9-11 or the JFK shooting, but it was more subdued all day. We had one kid who had Down's Syndrome or something, who kept laughing, so we spent more time telling him to stop 'behaving inappropriately' than we did actually watching the news coverage.

I was pregnant with David.  I was home, on bed rest (I had just flown home from Palm Beach, Florida and run into some difficulty with the pregnancy.)  Anyway, I woke up at about 10 am Pacific Time, turned on the TV, and there was Dan Rather, narrating the lift-off.  Even in my half-asleep stupor, I knew something was off, because normally the launches took place at about 8:30 am (Eastern), and this was much later than that.

Of course, seconds later I realized this was a replay of a tragedy.

Flying For Me

Well I guess that you probably know by now
I was one who wanted to fly
I wanted to ride on that arrow of fire right up into heaven
And I wanted to go for every man
Every child, every mother of children
I wanted to carry the dreams of all people right up to the stars

And I prayed that Id find an answer there
Or maybe I would find a song
Giving a voice to all of the hearts that cannot be heard
And for all of the ones who live in fear
And all of those who stand apart
My being there would bring us a little step closer together

They were flying for me
They were flying for everyone
They were trying to see a brighter day for each and everyone

They gave us their light
They gave us their spirit and all they could be
They were flying for me
They were flying for me

And I wanted to wish upon the Milky Way
And dance upon a falling star
I wanted to give myself and free myself, and join myself with it all

Given the chance to dream, it can be done
The promise of tomorrow is real
Children of spaceship Earth
The future belongs to us all

She was flying for me
She was flying for everyone
She was trying to see a brighter day for each and everyone

She gave us her light
She gave us her spirit and all she can be
She was flying for me
They were flying for me
They were flying for everyone
They were trying to see a brighter day for each and everyone

They gave us their light
They gave us their spirit and all they can be
They were flying for me
They were flying for me
They were flying for me
They were flying for me

I had just awakened from from the previous night's sleep & looked at the clock. I swear as I sit here it was exactly 11:39 am. The explosion probably happened right when I woke up.

Oddly enough, though I was only 50 miles away & could've looked out my window & seen it, I had no idea it even happened until about 5 hours later on that evening.

I went out running errands that day & going about my daily business. Then I went in to work at 3 pm, to the hotel where I was working at the time. Around 5 pm or so, I went into the lounge to get a soda from the bartender as I did everyday. It was Happy Hour, the place was crowded with the local regulars & assorted business travelers, & the TV was on.

As I was raiding the hors d'oeuvres table, I heard the news anchor saying something about the space shuttle explosion, so I asked someone what he was talking about & the guy told me the space shuttle had blown up in mid-air.

It was really strange.

This is the Polaroid my dad took from their front yard...

They live about 20 miles from KSC.

I was at my High School and the principal had the news about it broadcasting on the PA system.  I later wrote a paper about it.  BTW Jimbo, I am surprised that NASA did not seek to confiscate that photo to assist in the reconstruction of the accident.

Question
NASA has the whole thing on film, I've seen it. How would they know Jimbo's dad took the picture?

It was actually a bit brighter from our view in Tampa, that day - but the photo Jimbo posted is EXACTLY what is burned into my brain. It took a while for the true horror of the event to settle in; nobody wanted to believe what they saw - nobody wanted to believe what they pretty much already knew.

I read the the Networks got about 900 phone calls from Soap Opera Fans who were upset their shows were pre-empted because of this Disaster.Confused

While was watching the Coverage, (After I arrived at the Ski Lodge) A Couple of Roomates came in and asked why I wasn't at the Party. I told them I was watching the Coverage of the Space Shuttle. Their reply was "What? They haven't launched it yet!" The Network was about to replay the Launch, I told them to watch and they understood why I wasn't there, they went down and broke the news to those who were attending. (There were quite a few who, because they were on the road, had not heard about the Disaster.)Cry

I'm sure it was quite a bit brighter there on the east coast than the way it looks in that photo too, Pa. It just looks dark because it's a 23 y/o Polaroid.

Yes they did, but I seem to remember them asking for help from citizens with derbris recovery and they might want photos from every possible angle.  And they would not know whi had photos but they might have asked for photos from citizens like they did with the derbris.
