I've noticed in the past few months that the quality of chips (potato, corn, tortilla, cheese puffs, etc)  from several different companies are, well, 'different' now.
A lot of the taste has disappeared, and if the bag has been sitting in one position for a while, the oil in the chips seeps to the bottom (and the bottom ones are literally soaked.)  Shocked
I'm thinking that the companies have switched to "healthy" cooking oils now that hydrogenated oils have been "outlawed", and this has affected the flavor  ("hmm, tastes like oil."), as well as making greasier chips.  I used to be able to eat a few handfuls at a time, but now even a small amount starts to make me feel sick.  Dead
Has anybody else noticed a change in their snacks?  (Just curious.)

I think I'm going to switch to pretzels....

I stopped eating my Cool Ranch Doritos several years ago, tried them this year, and hated them. Maybe you're right.

They're trying to make junk-food healthy.  It just can't be done.  Junk-food is for enjoying for no good reason.  Not intended to be healthy.

I know this has been posted at CIH a number of times...but sorry, this article from the Onion (courtesy Britastar) is tooooo funny.

excerpt:

"Here," said Frito-Lay CEO Al Carey as he disgustedly tossed a bag of the company's new Flat Earth-brand snack crisps onto the lectern during a meeting with shareholders and members of the press. "Here's some sh*t that's made from beets. I hope you're all happy now that you have your precious beet chips with the recommended daily serving of fruit, or vegetables, or whatever the hell a 'beet' is."

I only buy the grocery store brands, so I'm not sure what the big boys are doing with their stuff.

The ones I buy still taste just fine.

I've got an unopened bag of barbeque flavored pork rinds that I bought several months ago sitting up in the cupboard and a not quite as old opened bag of tortilla chips in the fridge along with an unopened jar of salsa that has been around about as long as the pork rinds, all of which are going to get consumed Tuesday night as I follow the election returns.

I've been waiting for a special occasion to eat that stuff & tomorrow night is as good an occasion as any.

Just need to get a 2 litre bottle of SODA. Thumbs%20Up

I can't even eat regular Lay's anymore, they've gotten so bland-tasting.  I now buy store brand barbecue chips.

I always pick up 2-3 1oz bags of UTZ sour cream & onion chips every time I shop. The big bags are ruffled and I don't like those. They also get stale before I can finish it.

So I guess you CAN have just one.  (Anyone remember that very old ad campaign?)

UTZ is great.  I used to buy their snack mix at BJ's in the big plastic barrels.  It would stay fresh in there - but for the life of me I can't recall if we ever had one open for more than a week.  The stuff's too good.
Let's try not to be boring, mkay?

My real passion are mixed nuts.  I buy a huge container from Costco and my wife and I have some after she gets home from work.  We also have a nice, cold beer.

Funny, I can't eat Wise anymore - they are very greasy and salty to me anymore.

Only 'snack foods' one sees around here are either Sav-A-Lot/Aldie's Cheese Puffs (white, or orange), or Jalepeno Cheetos...and they belong 100% to MissyD.
And that is fine.
The Molson's Ice 'snack drink' belongs 100%, to me (she only drinks 'top-shelf', well-made Long Island Ice Tea - and then, only once in a 'blue moon').

Tiz,

Maybe because they once misprinted the box, reversing the last letters of the words.  Wink

Do they still look like this?  I thought they changed them to look identical to Cheeze-Its.

They are in those boxes of DooDads(sp?) but long since pulled of shelves. Those square Cheeze Its are a dime a dozen but not the same.

Along the nuts line, I could sit down with a nutcracker and crack open chestnuts all nite. Yummy.

We just recently got Aldi's around here. Several opened all at once, then a couple of weeks later a couple more.

I've been there twice & they have some good stuff at pretty good prices.

I've bought chips both times & last time I got their brand of "Chex Mix".

Just as good as the name brand, bigger bag for less moolah.

                        I like that.

what the hell? those looks like something unappetizing close up even though they're nuts.

Anyway I bet I can pinpoint the unjunking of junk food being around the late 1990's and early 2000s say between 1999 and 2001 or 2002.
One good thing about TV-you could always turn it off

Look, Tiz!  They still make them in Canada!  When my dad comes to visit me in March, I'll have to get him to bring some down and I'll ship them to ya!
