One more vote for liking the commercial... The only thing I didn't like is the Bug's voice - that German scientist, male Dr. Ruth sound just doesn't fit with that car, for some reason.

That's because they stopped making it!     I'd really like to find a vintage one of these.

Brooke Shields cracks me up in this, but what is up with the car name?!  Routan?  Sounds like it should feature an all-wicker interior.

And will someone please tell me what the heck is a "fruitbooter."  That's the second time I've seen the term used here, and I'm curious.

Its a term made by skateboarders for roller bladers. Roller blades = fruit boots. Fruit as in homosexual. Roller bladers took the term and turned it into a positive, I dated a kid who wasn't shy about saying how big of a fruit booter he was. Needless to say that relationship ended fast.

I don't like VW's or their campaigns period. They sell their cars on " German engineering"- which to me brings up all kinds of seemingly negative WW2 images even though I know that's politically incorrect. Secondly, basically everyone I know who's owned one has had it blow up or have incredibly awful mechanical problems. Lastly, most of them are made in Mexico, Brazil, or some other country. Very few are actually German.

One more thing... How could you NOT see that this is a Chrysler minivan?! Anyone who likes VWs will hate this thing.

Hate to be a stickler, but admiration for the engineering accomplishments of the German (and Swiss and Austrian) peoples far predates Hitler and the Nazis.  And the "kidding" remark about Mexican fertility is pretty offensive, as well.

Do your homework, N00B, and check your racism at the door.

Love endures all.

Well said, o'Frien'Pup.

...but...can I bark a bit? Especially as having won 'today's number one racist/insensitive bastard' award?

This is CERTAINLY not directed TO YOU (love ya ta the end, Kiddo!) - 'tis simply something I will suggest, without any desire for rebuttal....

I'm going to say what I am 'cause You're simply, in no uncertain terms, 'Special'.

Because YOU and 'MrPup' already VERY well may agree....(love ya both!)

Being called a 'racist', or being implied as BEING racist, is quite painful. Peronally, I don't care for it; I HATE the word - PART of the problem seems to be within the understanding of the spoken/written intended message presented, and the perception in the way it was put forward; things are so often misunderstood - often where humor unintentionally becomes insult. AND THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THIS! Simple human nature, experience, and psychology seem to be mitigating factors, as best *I* can tell.
The largest problem is really within the same messages and answers being presented back and forth in unintentionally, yet, conflicting 'understandings' - probably due to our ability realistically recognize our own limitations of communication between unlike 'personalities'...

Dearest Pa, I don't consider it barking at all.

I don't like to call anyone a name, particularly racist (perhaps bigoted would have been a more accurate choice); however, there were several things in the post in question that got de Big Dawg's hackles horripilating.  Even the venerable Sassypuss was sharpening her claws in anticipation of a bit of shredding.

Well, I might admire German engineering more if it was actually world-class like it might have been decades ago. But the truth is that if you look at any Consumer Reports or JD Power ratings, almost all German cars get fairly low marks in reliability and quality. Most-especially VW- are placed lower down the list. Last time I looked, VW was down under all the Japanese and US brands.

So when I see a commercial that remarks about "German engineering", its an oxymoron.

Yeah, didn't the Nazis use Sham-WOW to clean up the blood of innocent people?

'Cept there's statistical support of it.  But we don't want facts to get in the way of being nice.

As far as German engineering...back in the early 90's, I began noticing that many of the cars I'd see with lights not working, were Volkswagens and BMWs.  But I also knew some people with VWs and BMWs, and they always seemed to be having electrical problems of one sort or another.  I thought "So much for German engineering."  I haven't noticed this sort of thing lately, though.

Who cares if she looks and performs good. The problem with this spot is the language and theme. I link it to election time, and they're saying the Republican (so-called anti-full abortion) ticket is like German engineering, and that people (Republican-minded) are going to have babies to be Republican, which is totally whack! But another take on this spot is that it forces me to think of the absurdity as if it were a reality and when I think of how this commercial could be reality I end up thinking of huge Mexican households who seem to generate offspring as if they were trying to fill a tortilla bowl full of themselves. Of course I'm kidding. I also think VW needs to stop the nazi engineering connotations they bring to their ads and brand. They may be efficient and good with numbers, but that doesn't mean the public wants to hear about their engineering like WW2 was never centered upon the might of the Germans to build a massive war industry and produce mass amounts of tanks and submarines which were somewhat new to the engineering world at the time. So yeah, they could lighten up on their recent output of crazy-minded commercial gimmicks, we know they are crazy.

Okay, now that I've actually paid attention to the commercial (and the one with the Bug), I do get the shivers when she talks about having babies for German engineering.  Sorry, I guess it comes with the territory of being Jewish and being raised with all the stories of Eugenics and Dr. Mengele's "engineering" experiments on alive and conscious children.  *shudder*

Replied in the other thread about how much I HATE this ad, but it bears repeating.
Not to mention FaithSF's shiver-worthy insinuation RE: "German Engineering"
that makes the ad all the more sinister.  Never made that mental connection before, but by Heaven I'll never be able to UN-make it!Dead
Plus heavy-handed attempt at "satire"/"sarcastic humor"?  MASSIVE FAIL!Angry
