holly crap this is annoying

i worked at a starbucks for a year and sure we do make every drink to order. and if you're a coffee drinker then starbucks is the way to go, believe me, but why on earth do they have the habit of using such horribly irritating songs in their commercials? i go straight for the mute button on this one, and usually the one that airs begins with the vocals (about 2 or 3 seconds in on this video), so its immediately annoying.

The first line of this song is just so strange for a coffee commercial.

"We get up every morning just to start cranking the generator..."

This does not sound like a hippy-trippy folk song for a coffee company, it sounds like words Toby Keith would sing if he sponsored an electric utility. This is yet another commercial that following the current trend of amateur sounding "indie" music. Breathy, airy female singer who is never quite on pitch.

I'm glad this doesn't come on very often on the channels I watch. It is indeed irritating.

I actually think that commercial is kinda cool.

However, I HATE Starbucks' "you" campaign.   Have you ever read the back of one of their cups?   They say things like "all about YOU" and for a while there was a gigantic poster in the store with a picture of a cup of coffee, elegantly surrounded by coffee beans and the single word "you."

Narcissism much?

The commercial doesn't bother me.  But I DESPISE the song!!  I get irritated when companies try to look 'hip' (a'la Target) with their indie-ish (no offense, indie music!) vibes.

But I did notice when it was just on, they seem to have shortened it a bit.  Sue gets her coffee a bit faster than before.  You know, when the song annoyingly turns into "ba ba ba ba ba ba....." for the last 1/4 of the commercial. Unhappy

Why don't they show REAL coffee bean fields, the ones growing next to the cocaine fields with machine gun armed guards and under age children working the fields in near slavery conditions?

AThomas- Maybe you can define "free trade" coffee? I'm a coffee nut, and yet know nothing about why "free trade" coffee is so important. Maybe b/c a part of me is afraid to find out, lest we have to give up the convenience of DD and Cafe Bustelo.

I think free trade is somehow a lot nicer for the people who are growing the coffee. So it's avoiding the scenario Athomas is showing.

Probably for the same reason we don't want to know how meat gets to our tables.  We simply don't want to know.

Everybody just seems so happy to pay four to six bucks for a cup of coffee.
