Chris Cornell, former lead singer of Sound Garden and AudioSlave has died suddenly and unexpectedly at the age of 52.

Totally shocking. This was one talented guy.

What a shame!!!

Black Hole Sun, won't you come, won't you come....

RIP Chris Cornell.

Sad day for grunge!
Not only did Chris Cornell have an awesome voice, but he was also a damn good rhythm guitarist!

Exactly, Jimmy.

He was one rock star that I can truly say I envied.

He could sit down with nothing more than an unplugged acoustic guitar and make awesome music happen.

Plus, he had the kind of looks that, combined with his wealth, fame and talent probably caused beautiful women to just throw themselves at his feet.

Not just a sad day for grunge, but a sad day for music.

He performed earlier, his final song being Led Zep's In My Time of Dying.  Weird.  Did he plan this?

Not sure I know any Soundgarden songs.  What would be their most well-known?

RIP to him.

Yeah, I listened to that one.  I'd never heard it (until now).  Not bad.

The whole grunge rock thing escaped me.  Most of it just didn't register.  I don't dislike it or anything; it just didn't do anything for me.  Maybe I was just a few years too old to relate.

One punk band (Flipper) I used to see in the early 80s is considered a progenitor of grunge.  That's what I've heard anyway.

You never heard that song on the radio back in the early 90's?

No.  I pretty much stopped listening to the radio by the mid-80s, when I feared having to hear the likes of Depeche Mode, the Cure, Sting and U2 on my former favorite stations.

Just awful, awful news, to say the least.  One of my favorite singers and such a talented guy.  Then considering his family and young kids...really, really sucks. Cry

I am probably around the same age as you Thor, but perhaps it's because of where I was from, I didn't mind some of the 80's synth bands, like Depeche Mode, Ultravox (I'm actually a friend of Midge Ure), The Human League, Thompson Twins, Eurythmics, Spandau Ballet, Pet Shop Boys (they're good lads).
I love my classic rock bands too, after all I grew up attending shows by John Mayall, Eric Clapton, Genesis, Yes, Jethro Tull, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Pink Floyd, Thin Lizzy, Status Quo, Deep Purple, Slade, Alex Harvey....and many more.
I actually appreciate the music of the 80's so much more than the grunge stuff, but the grunge stuff was so much better than the sh*te that is passing as music today.

I liked a few, too.  OMD (the earlier stuff), Wall of Voodoo (with Stan Ridgway) and others.  Mostly, though, besides the classic rock, it was still the Ramones, Cramps, Blondie and X for me.

You mentioned Slade.  The radio station I listen to regularly plays Slade.  Even Ambrose Slade.

They're now saying his death was suicide by hanging.

It doesn't make much sense.  Like you were saying about his looks, his talent and obvious success. It seems he would have beautiful women falling all over him.

He was married to his second wife and had kids from both.

He had reportedly battled anxiety, depression and addiction his whole life.

Must've gotten to be too much for him.

Hard to imagine killing yourself at 52 years of age with a net worth of $60 million.

If you read the articles online about Chris Cornell's life and death, you may be able to understand better.  He suffered from depression all his life.  He had alcohol and substance abuse problems, starting when he was 13 years old.  He told his wife before he died he may have taken a couple of extra Ativans.  This drug was supposedly prescribed to him and if he did take an extra dose, it could have triggered his seemingly impromptu suicide. Suicidal thoughts is one of the rarer side effects of this drug, lorazepam.  If you listen to his music and read his lyrics, you will understand he lived under that black cloud.  Yes, he was very good looking and handsome, a really nice and humble guy, sweet and charitable, and had loads of talent that he gifted the world with.  This didn't make his demons go away.

Knowing he had a wife (or two) and kids makes it even harder to understand.

I guess it proves that years of abuse of drugs and alcohol changes how the brain works.

That's probably true.

Sounded like he had been battling inner demons since he was very young.

Probably before he even began using drugs.

Hard to say.

I wonder if he left any kind of note or letter.

Sad, sad, sad.

His wife is denying suicide.

Accidental hanging??  Did he do a David Carradine?

His wife Vicky is saying that if he did commit suicide, it could have been caused by his taking the Ativan which could have altered his thinking.  It is hard to know at this point what really happened in the under an hour between the time he was last seen alive, talked on the phone with his wife, who then sounded the alarm and sent the friend-of-the-family bodyguard over to check on him because she says he was slurring his words and hung up on her saying he was tired, and how he got the "band" around his neck that supposedly killed him.  The autoerotica asphyxiation rumor started immediately, however, it's since been reported that Chris was found fully clothed by the bodyguard, who broke down the hotel room door himself and who then called the police.  Previously, this same bodyguard gave Chris the two Ativan pills, he reports, after Chris returned to his room after the performance.

The toxicology report has to be completed, which as we know takes weeks, and the investigation into his death is ongoing.
