The Boomerang channel airs these anti-bullying public service announcements round the clock, but their latest one is, to put it mildly, pretty f*cking stupid. Thumbs Down

I can appreciate the message they're sending, but there are less annoying ways to do so. And do they have to run it 10 times every half hour? I'm exaggerating, but ... yeah...

I find it hard to hate Jeremy, he does a brilliant job on Adventure Time, but this one is really horrible.

The "Running Errands With My Mom" promo for Incredible Crew was actually kind of good, and it feels like they tried to do the same thing with this...but it's flat, annoying, and just horrible...it makes me want to beat him up, and tell her she looks fat (*gasp* evil bully!)

Instead of telling people not to bully, they should give victims tips on how to fight back:

"Hey kid, being bullied?  Don't run off like a crying wuss and snitch.  Give the f**ker a punch in the cock.  Twice.  Just to be sure....  Big smile  "

^Yeah, but remember, "violence is never the answer."

If you pinch someone on the elbow these days you get arrested for physical assault.

That's what I was taught. Even if you get a good shoeing for your trouble, bullies think twice about picking on someone who's willing to throw a punch back.

When I was growing up/in school, rap was the genre of choice for the ghetto people in the school who were most likely to be the bullies. Not exactly the best music to choose for this.

When I was in school, many teachers intentionally looked the other way when it came to bullying. Probably because they didn't want to get involved and just wanted to get their paycheck and go home. That was my observation anyway.

On a random side note, the girl looks like a young Mandy Moore.

Even "Little House on the Prairie", which was the smarmiest, most idealistic "We're all special little snowflakes" shows...even THEY took this stance.

It was a dang good episode, too. If only to see the local pastor threaten these two burly men with death.

Then there is the other advice for bullied kids:

"You're getting bullied? Then it must be something you are doing. Stop doing it and they'll stop."

"You're getting abused? Then it must be something you are doing. Stop doing it and he'll stop hitting you."

MrTim might've been speaking facetiously when he said that.

However, there are some people who ask for it.  We may not choose to beat them up, but we might mock them or ostracize them or something.  We might be able to prevent kids from beating up or harassing another kid, but we can't make them like and accept that person.  Same with adults, for that matter.

^True.

If some boy decides to go to school dressed up in red stilettoes, dangly clip-ons, etc. to his small town school, and then is in a dazed stupor because, "Mommy, why don't they like me?"

Damn kid is asking for it, and frankly the parents are to blame. Put your foot down and tell the kid to dress and behave like a boy and leave "discovering" himself for when he's at home behind closed doors. I'd say in most of the cases, the kids just acting like a giant fool to begin with, so promoting this kind of behaviour is pretty much setting him up for everything he gets.

School is not about "being yourself". It's about learning, so in a way, I'd say I agree with Tim's point. Schools are becoming less about learning and more about socialising, expressing one's self, forming cliques, etc. but they're young, have poorly formed brains and don't know enough about the world. If you're one of those "different" people, then I'm sorry, but you shouldn't parade it around for everyone to see. You learn to adapt to your surroundings, because 9 times out of 10 the thing these kids are so adamant about expressing doesn't actually need any outward expression.

Honestly, I've had a hard time feeling sympathy for some of these kids who've been "afflicted" by bullying, because all too often you just see signs of them asking for it in a situation where they could have simply reigned themselves in.

^  Too often, the whole bullying thing is cloaked in black and white.  Victimizer versus victim.  It's easier to understand that way.

There was this author---a gay guy---on TV the other day.  Ten years ago, he set out to write a book or screenplay or something about Matthew Shepard, that young guy who was killed supposedly just because he was gay.  He'd accepted the popular idea of what happened---until he did his extensive research into the matter.  What he discovered was that the truth was not the way it was handed to and accepted by the public.  Seems Shepard was very involved in the bar/meth-dealing scene in his town, and that his death had more to do with drug-dealing than sexual orientation.  In fact, everyone the author spoke with, said that one of his killers was also his part-time lover.  Lotta drugs and small-town interpersonal drama, but not homophobia.

But let's not let facts get in the way of a nice clean black & white "hate crimes" narrative.

Facts don't matter when "hate" = a huge settlement.

...and legislation.  In fact, as I recall, that story was very influential in getting hate crime laws passed back then.  Both the media and gay activists were clamoring for a good hate crime to bolster legislation, and they found it with this story---truth be damned.

Ah, yes, where if you exhale a little too much CO2 next to a "special" person, then can get you locked up for trying to asphyxiate them.

If I hadn't already lost faith in humanity, this video would have done it. I like how they try to sell the horsesh*t that snitching is "brave". Also, 95 percent of "bullying", includes no physical aspect to it, but is rather "thought crime" in that a person is merely saying something mean, and they want to legislate against mean things.

^I think 95% is a bit much. Amongst female bullies, possibly (Though I've known plenty of girls who pick on people physically...and I've the scars to prove it), but I think most males prefer the physical aspect.
