Subject: How to..... on CIH
Date Posted: 08 Jun 2008 at 12:39am
In this topic, short as it might be, we will discuss how to do certain things to enhance our posts.
The first is, how to insert a YouTube video into your post. Instead of just a boring link to it.
First, find a cool video that you want to insert into your post.
For our first example we will use one of Nathan's CIH videos.
Go to the address bar and copy the whole address on to the clipboard. Control C "CTRL" "C" is the easiest way.
Then paste this link into your post. "CTRL" "V" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7d1S6rBTKg - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0J9A-H4ygQ
As you can see it creates a nice, but boring hyperlink. What we want to focus on in this hyper link is only the part after where it says "watch?v=" the last part.
Make a copy of that part and paste it again. T0J9A-H4ygQ
Now to make it appear in your post as a cool YouTube video link simply type:
[tube ] paste the link again T0J9A-H4ygQ then [/tube ] Note: You will have to leave the extra spaces out as well as of course my instructional text.
That's all there is to it. Now the video will show in your post. I demonstrate here.
If you want to see the actual format. Just quote this post and you can see it.

I've tried this three times over the past month. It worked the first time. The last two times, however, all that posted was the text (the brackets/"tube" stuff), and I ended up just posting the link.

How do you put an image in your sig line or at the bottom of your posts?
Been meaning to ask that for awhile.
Thankfully someone created a thread for that very kind of question.

Like I said in my previous post, you can't put the whole youtube address in there. It won't work. You have to only put in what comes after the = sign.

If you go into your Member Control Panel, go down to where it says signature. You will see something that says BBCodes. Click on that. It will tell you how to do different types of signatures.

For those of us who use Internet Explorer 7.
If the text is too small or a picture is too smal to see, look down to the bottom right of the window. You should see a plus magnifying glass then 100% then a down arrow. Click on the down arrow, you can select any size to magify the whole internet explorer window.

Very cool, Holly! Thank you so much.
Also, if you go up to your browser's toolbar and click on View, then hit Text Size, you can increase or decrease it. But the CTRL++ does the same thing, a lot easier!

I don't have a huge monitor, and all the junk I have on it (such as my toolbars, search bars, Smiley Central, and all that other stuff on top) makes the space for the actual website and email and other programs even smaller.
As I need that stuff, and didn't want to get rid of any of it, I figured there's gotta be a way to temporarily hide it all. So I started playing with my function buttons (F1 to F12). Voila!! F11 is the key!! Hit it once and it goes away. Hit it again and it returns.

Sometimes when you copy a link to a YouTube Video, you get some extra characters:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7d1S6rBTKg&feature=user
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdvL3FBwHEc&feature=related
You only need the part of the link IN BETWEEN watch?v= and &feature=xxxx.
So, in the examples I posted above, you only need R7d1S6rBTKg and bdvL3FBwHEc.
These are the YouTube Codes for the videos.
Put that code inside TUBE tags, and you're golden.

I have a jar of gold flakes. Unfortunately, it's one of those tiny little jars I would've put my white stash into years ago. And, sitting at the bottom in water, it's only about 1/32 of an inch high. The sum total of all my goldmining expeditions.

I have an old broken Swiss watch that my mom bought my dad when they were dating in Germany in 1948. The inside of the back of the case is stamped .75 oz. of 22 karat gold.
I'm not sure if that's just the back or the entire case.
But at today's prices, that thing is worth a pretty penny.
Sentimental value just won't let me sell it.

Probably worth more as a piece of jewelry, though. Not only is it worth the weight of the gold, it also has value as a collectible.
Even gold nuggets are that way. People will pay lots more for a gold nugget than it's weight would justify.

How to post ♫ to indicate lyrics to a song or whatever.
I use the character map and copy the notes that are in the font list and then paste them in a sentence.
♫I got them from the Arial Black font list. It's the third from the last character.
If you don't know how to find the character map, simply go to the start menu then look for search, then search 'character map'.

Eh, for the most part, Vista is really no different than any other windows operating system. Other than the side bar with the analog clock that looks almost identical to the one I have in my living room.
The search feature is definately a plus. It pre-indexes so that when you search, the results are instantaneous. Unlike XP where you have to go take a lunch then come back for your results.
Really other than that Vista is pretty much, same old, same old.

Wasn't trying to cause a dispute. I mean, I use Vista, but I'm no techno geek that would have found the error to the million power like they did on that flawed pentium chip.
I use it to surf the net, watch YouTube and banter about on CIH and Oh yeah play a game here or there.
For me, I just don't see any huge difference between it and XP, however as I mentioned earlier, another plus of Vista is that when you shut it down, it shuts down.
Every computer I have ever had with XP on down, would lock up under most conditions and require a manual OS override to shut it down.
There, now I said it.

Well, I guess I'll have to repost this question again since it apparently f**king disappeared after I posted it the first f**king time.
What I asked earlier is if there is anyway to merge your Outlook inbox, sent items, drafts etc. from one computer to the inbox, sent items & drafts on another without losing the emails from the target computer.
Do you need special software, or can it be done from within Windows?
There used to be a DOS command that allowed you to merge data from one file into another file of the same type.
Anyone know anything about this?

Sometimes the '=' is followed by a '-' or a '_'
If your video doesn't show up, check for that, as you'll need to keep those.
Also, please remember to use the video icon, so those with slower connections will know what to expect when they open your thread. If you want to use a different icon, please put (video) at the end of the thread title.
I'll go in and edit thread titles/icons when I see if they're needed; which unless you're the OP you are unable to do anyway. I'll also turn your links into embedded video(s), as Nathan has asked. Not a problem for me, there's only that delay between the time that you post it, and the time that I see it.
I'm sure you all would rather embed your own video, though .

Including pictures and video within quoted posts takes up space and is often unnecessary.
To delete a picture, within QUOTE tags:
Tiny squares (or handles) will appear at the corners and sides of the picture - this lets you now that you've selected it
Press the delete key
To delete a video
Highlight the entire TUBE tag, it should look like this:
Press the delete key

Yeah...especially unnecessary when the original is just a few posts up the same page.

Yeah, I guess the original upload needs to be in stereo.
I have videos that I uploaded in stereo, but with the normal playback they play in monaural.
If you add the ending they play in stereo.
I've been putting a lot of Youtube songs into my iTunes...and, yes, even if the original is not in stereo (as might be the case with really old songs), the sound quality is better with that &fmt=18 added on at the end.

Is there a way to save what you have typed while you are writing a reply? There are so many times I have some how wiped out a big long reply.

I know, I really hate that.
Whenever I write a really long reply, I highlight the whole thing then Ctrl C then open a blank note pad then Ctrl V before I hit the post button.
That way if it gets wiped out, I have a backup copy. Sometimes I just leave the notepad open, sometimes I save it to the desktop.

Thank you MM. I'll have to try that. I have done this so many times and sometimes I re-type it and sometimes I just say screw it.

I open up a new email, and copy/paste into it. This is especially helpful when typing a private message, as sometimes, people's in-boxes are full, and then that PM you just typed is gone.
You can also copy/paste into an email if you want to use a font that CIH doesn't offer. I don't care so much about fonts, but I've done it a few times, like for birthday or milestone comments.

I like the idea of the metal detector, but I'm really trying to imagine an accasion when I'd use it. If I had the need, I could just borrow a friend's real metal detector. They let you know if your target is junk or coins, and approx how deep you'll have to dig for it.

Here's a good tip on how to show videos in higher quality.
Put &fmt=18 at the end of the YouTube link.
I see that now, Youtube offers the option of "higher quality" in some videos. Now, you can just click on "high quality" in their options box for those videos.

What does anyone here know about removing a partition from a hard drive?

I know that you better back up all the information on the partition first. I'm fairly certain it will wipe it clean if you do it. PaW?

Yea, I Googled it already & came up with the same stuff. I even downloaded a program from CNET called "Partition Zapper", but I was hoping for some personal insight before I try running it.
