It seems this thread has drifted away from the "Peggy Kessler PLEASE GO AWAY!", so I don't feel bad about letting everybody in on a good site for links to old SNL shows and skits. It's Surf the Channel, they have tons of old and new TV shows and movies.

I don't have a problem with Ms. Kessler personally.  I do, however, have a problem with the CTCA using her as a tool to exploit and give false hope to desperate, ill people.

Let's face it--if the CTCA were truly producing breakthroughs in cancer treatment, you would hear about them in places other than their ads (which, if you'll notice, only seem to air during the cheapest hours on the cheapest channels).

I'm not a doctor, but my gut feeling about Ms. Kessler is that she either: (1.) actually had earlier-stage cancer, (2.) was misdiagnosed and never had cancer in the first place, or (3.) was extremely lucky and responded to long-shot treatment.  Regardless of which was truly the case, she beat almost incalculable odds and her case is so atypical that it shouldn't be used to give hope to anyone else.

The best place for a cancer patient is in a large, nonprofit teaching hospital offering clinical trials.

I think Peggy says that having hope is what's important.  Probably is.

One thing I gotta say is that, if I had cancer, it'd be nice to have a place where all my medical records were, where all avenues were explored, where doctors could get together and discuss my case face-to-face, where I didn't have to deal with the logistics of dragging myself from lab to doctor to clinic to hospital, etc.  In other words, I'd probably find some comfort in dispensing temporarily with some of the inconveniences that come along with the disease.  It'd suck to be sick and exhausted from chemotherapy, and have to drive myself to get  treatments, call for lab results, get put on hold, wait for the doctor to call back, etc.

So, I just imagine this place makes the whole thing a lot easier to deal with.  That's what I'm guessing the place is like, anyway.

This thread made me look into CCofA a little deeper, as I read more comments.
Then I had to gather my additional thoughts and history of experiences with others...
~~~
I guess, in a way, I cannot really fault CCofA; when I looked into them, there are lots of various opinions; lots of anti-CCofA blogs out there, but then again, some positive, also.
Nothing damning from a legal-perspective, nothing pointing at them as a bunch of 'fraudsters'.
~~~
From my experiences with others, Hope, Positive Thinking, Action, along with support groups, such as Gilda's Club (Gilda Radner), go a long way, when it comes to surviving and hopefully beating cancer.
What is terrible is just how very fast cancer can sneak up and rear its ugly head with anyone - and, even though the 'old peeps' on this board may feel a little more susceptible, cancer certainly isn't picky about age, but may look at a lifestyle preferencially, but not necessarily. It is cruel.
As we all know, there are many different kinds of cancers; there really isn't a 'one-size-fits-all' solution.
All the same, the gut-wrenching, puke-inducing, hair & weight-removing radiation treatments should never be discounted - if one feels they've a good doctor, and one isn't ready to 'call it a day', then, well...roll with the flow; go ahead and get that 'plug in the chest' and do what has been advised while staying mentally strong.
Experimentation also counts - just because a solution doesn't have that U.S. medical approval stamp doesn't mean it isn't worth learning about and deciding if it makes sense for the individual - by only that individual.
I have a very close, good friend who just went through eight months of hell at one of the most famous cancer centers, but, between adjusting his lifestyle (including retiring), his diet, and doing what the doctor said, is now *not* in remission, but has been basically been declared 'stagnate'; the cancers cannot be removed, but they are dead. He also 'experimented' some, too - radically changed his diet (lots of fish and health-oriented/grown foods)...and today, is a different version of the same person (and one I consider as not only a success, but now, an inspiration - he readily talks to anyone; he's kind of an ultra-positive 'Kaptain Kangaroo' and constantly is willing to 'give hope' to others).

Peggy reports her doctor leaned over her bed and said. "Peggy, you have cancer. You have 2 months to live"....and then left the room. What a crock of crap. When this commercial starts with this I wish I had a microphone to interrupt and start calling her a liar. I'm a dentist and some of the sh*t I hear from patients about other dentists is just laughable. "He didn't say why, he just pulled my tooth" is one of my favorites.
Business-wise, any doc that tells a patient "you gonna die" and walks away will starve and that hospital will lose a ton of biz.
I despise this commercial more than any other.

It's "LAURA" who says the doctor leaned over her bed, not Peggy. You must be the only one who hasn't seen the Peggy commercial about a million times, like the rest of it.

No, I'm pretty sure that was Peggy.  After she says that, she says something like "it was like he was telling me to go to the store".  In other words, he informed her of her cancer very clinically and matter-of-factly.

No, Laura is the one who says that the doctor "leaned over my bed." I've seen all these CCA commercials hundreds of times, they run them EVERY NIGHT in Philly. Peggy says "It was like he was tellin' me 'go to the store' "

Regardless of who got the leaner, Peggy is the one who implied the doc didn't give a crap by telling her she had cancer and you gonna die and I'm outta here. Pure, unadulterated BS.
No matter who the patient spokesperson is, CTCA is using the scare tactic that all docs other than those at CTCA don't give a shyt about you.
I'll put a bullet to my head if my only option is that joint.

Shocked....I got to wondering if Peggy Kessler was still alive.
A little research turned up this comment from another board:

"Peggy Kessler actually is a real person who is an 8 year survivor of stage 4 pancreatic cancer. She lives in Rapid City SD where she helps to run a general store with family members. Peggy has her own little business as a wilderness trail guide for lesbians. I am not kidding! This lesbian couple in my town spent their vacation on a horseback riding/camping wilderness adventure in the hills around Mount Rushmore. They were showing me photos when I mentioned that the guide looked like the woman from the Cancer Treatment Center commercials. It was! I had thought she was an actress too. Seems like she flew to Illinois to be treated and against the odds, the treatments worked. One thing about her commercial... if you get up real close, there is a teeny line of text that says "Results are not typical". "

From the sound of it, the chance of survival is directly tied to all about what you eat.
Everyone better check their diet.

Every single CTCA ad, the patient initially seems to have the Marquis de Sade Oncologist. From Richard "Dick" Stump who had the big burly bastard, to the soul singing sistah whose doctor's "hand even felt cold"  all seem to be miraculosly embraced in the glowing warm fuzzies of CTCA.
Doesn't that seem a tad unreal?

Naaah, not necessarily, Mad.  If part of what they're selling is "warm fuzzies", they probably screen their medical staff for their ability to provide that to the patients.  I don't have much experience as a patient, but I'm guessing that if I had a team of people rooting for me, I'd be more likely to root for myself as well.

A CT scan I had in 2005 showed that I probably either had lung cancer or TB.  I even had a larynx problem that was indicative of cancer.  I was ready to give up when the TB tests came back negative.  Luckily, I had a friend in the medical field (a PA) who (illegally) accessed my lab work results and insisted that, despite my doctors' concerns, I did not have cancer.  As it turns out, I did not.  I had pneumonia.  The larynx problem was simply due to constant coughing.  My friend explained this to me.  The doctors did not.

Thor, I was just saying that I can't believe every one of those patients had a doctor who was cold and uncaring. If that WERE the cse, wouldn't you go get a second opinion from someone you felt comfortable with? If I don't like a doctor - SEEEEEEEE YAAAAAAA!

It's so important to have a good rapport with your doctors and dentists, etc.

For pete sake, I be t a lot of women go religiously to their hair stylist. Why put up with a doctor you can't stand?

I don't know.  If you go to doctors regularly, you might have the knowledge to know that a particular doctor is not the right one for you.  If you don't go to doctors, you might be like a babe in the woods.  If it wasn't for my medical friend, I'd have been like that.

Sounds like Peggy was like that, too.  Luckily she had a sister who seemed more knowlegeable or confident with the world of medical doctors, and steered her in another direction.

I quit going to one doctor - a woman - who had longer chin hairs than the Smith Brothers. She was nice, knowledgeable but creepy looking. So, if I could drop a doctor over braidable chin hair, you can be damn sure if someone treated me like a piece of dirt, they'd be treated to a knuckle sandwich, a call to the AMA and a possible insurance claim.
