Hang on everyone on the east coast, Hurricane Matthew is coming our way. I'm preparing to go to my Cousin's house to ride the storm out if necessary. I'm also praying for all of you in its path. Hurricanes don't blow,. THEY SUCK!Ouch
Where will you be when the lights go out on August 21st?

Not good news at all and not the way I was expecting to celebrate the arrival of October.

Normally by this time of year, the tropical threat has passed.

My mom and sister live just a few miles inland from the eastern coast, too.

I am very concerned.

^ Do you have room for them?
How much rain are you expecting in the Orlando area?

I hope there is not much property damage.

No I really don't, but they wouldn't leave their house short of a mandatory evacuation order anyway, at which point I suppose they'd go to a local shelter. I live an hour's drive away.

It's hard to say right now what to expect re: wind and rain, because the damned thing could go in any direction.

Hoping to God it starts tracking farther east.

The only positive aspect is that we are on the "good" side (west) of the rotation. The east side is where the heaviest rain and strongest winds are. By the time it gets around to the west side, it's diminished a little bit.

The latest track forecast as of 11am...

Appears to be making landfall a bit further north, a trend which I would hope continues.

Also, there is now a tropical storm Nicole which they are suggesting could save the day for the US East coast by drawing Matthew out into the open ocean.

Come on Nicole!!!!! YOU GO, GIRL!!!!

I was supposed to meet Beloved in Rhode Island- he's there now but thinking of coming home early. So much for the long weekend. This is the first time I think I EVER had Columbus Day off. WIll probably spend it messing around with the generator.

I'm going to mow the yard tomorrow & secure loose stuff.  Been filling containers w/water & putting them in the freezer, because I'm expecting to lose power for a day or two (even being inland.)  I actually have more jugs of ice than food in there.  My skin has been crawling the past few days, so I'm sensing this is going to be a bad one...

It's gonna truly suck losing power, possibly for several days.

Strangely appropriate for the Halloween season...

5.21am EST Update: An infared satellite image of Matthew has been released which looks, eerily, like a grinning skull. Spooky.

A song I have been hearing in these parts.

Trip switch, trip switch

What we do when the power's out
What do we do when the lights go down
What we do when the power's out
What do we do when the lights go
Down, down, down, down, down, down
When the lights go
Down, down, down, down, down, down
Lights go

So, are any of you in the path going to evacuate?

I guess I should check out the Jersey forecasts.  I didn't think this storm was much of a threat in these parts, but maybe it is.  During Hurricane Sandy, people around here took shelter at...Walmart!  That could be fun if I didn't dislike customers so much.  They always want things.

My mom and sister live exactly 8.5 miles inland from the Atlantic shoreline.

Matthew is now predicted to make landfall somewhere right in that area with possible 130 mph winds.

I'm about 50 miles inland where we are predicted to get possibly 80mph winds.

I have had a constant sick, queasy feeling in my gut since yesterday.

Found 4 freezer platters (basically big stainless steel gel packs that caterers use in buffets) in the garage, so they're now added into the freezers.  At least they'll get 24 hours to freeze up.  Should add a couple days of cold.  Did find one milk jug that had split when freezing, but it will stay in there for now.

HAHahahahahahhaa! LOL That's a good one!  We're surrounded on 3 sides by water.  The only escape route is North, and it's headed that way. LOL  Besides, shooting at looters is frowned upon unless it's on your own property, so no...  Wink

Have your mom and sister decided to evacuate?  That sounds pretty serious.

I remember a show with Bob Vila...Florida has stricter building codes because of the storm potential.

I hope everyone stays safe.

I doubt they'll evacuate. Their area is not under an evacuation order and my mom wouldn't leave unless they made her.

Her house was built in the 50's prior to the new, tougher post Andrew standards.

I am really scared about this, not so much for myself, but my mom is 93 y/o and I don't know if she'll be able to handle the stress, especially if the roof comes off of the house.

And to make things even more complicated, the power is going to be out for days or maybe even weeks and it's going to be very difficult to make contact with them. Then, for at least two or three days afterwards, it may not even be possible to drive over there to check on them.

I have a sick feeling in my gut.

This truly SUCKS!!!!
