Anybody remember the old "Most Interesting Man in the World" commercials from Dos Equis beer? These are one of the few commercials I actually looked forward to. Until they "retired" him for some young guy to appeal to the millennials. His retirement is shown at the end of the video (at 7:06, below).

These commercials wouldn't make it with today's "toxic masculinity" fad... especially the one mention of "he wouldn't be afraid to show his feminine side... if he had one".

Here is a (very abridged) compilation (a LOT more are available on YouTube):

On a related note:
  • Even though Dos Equis is a technically a Mexican beer, it is actually made German-style, because the brewer was German (hence the clean smoothness of it*).
  • The two "X"s on the label (and the name, "Dos Equis"), refers to the fact that it was first brewed in 1897, and celebrated the approaching twentieth century.
*Yes, I am biased, I admit it. I don't always drink beer (although I usually prefer beer). But when I do, I strongly prefer Dos Equis (at least, the lager beer [just like TMIMITW], as opposed to the amber version). But people find me boring.

There have long been Aleman (Germans) in Latin America. I prefer dark beer. Dos Equis "Holiday" beer is very dark like Negra Modelo.

These really were fun ads with the original actor. Then they got the new guy (who was anything but interesting) and the commercials became so smugly self-aware that they lost any charm they still had. When we saw the new "Most Interesting Man In The World" interacting with the chronically unfunny Rob Riggle, it was clear that the folks at Dos Equis and whatever ad firm they employ were hell bent on burying the campaign forever. Typical beer commercial thinking - something works & captures the public's imagination, so let's start tweaking it & making it more & more self-referential until no one can stand it anymore.
