How many times has the song "Melt with you" by Modern English been used in commercials? The first time I heard it in a commercial some years ago, I thought it was a new song. Didn't realize it came out in the early 80's. But the point is, have the ad agencies become so lazy or run out of ideas that they use the same song to promote different products?

What's really stupid is that they don't realize that the song is about being in love at a time when the world is being destroyed by a nuclear bomb blast.

This is almost as bad as the fact that "Lust for Life" by Iggy Pop, a song about heroin addiction, has been used to advertise cruiselines.Wacko

I'm pretty sure whoever is writing these commercials has never really listened to either of these songs.Ermm

Seems like they use songs that appeal to those of the era corresponding with their product.  They use an Everly Brothers song from the 50's to attract the Hover-Round people.  They use a Buzzcocks song to appeal to the newest potential AARP set.  And they use a lot of techno stuff in ads for small performance cars to appeal to the young people who go for those cars.  One day, they'll be using gangsta rap music to promote Viagra.

But yeah, they could vary it up a bit.

I think they know what the song is about, but count on people's sense of nostalgia, and the fact that many people only know these songs by the hooks.

About 5 years ago, GM was using T. Rex's 20th Century Boy for their latest truck.  Never mind that the hook is "20th century toy, I wanna be your boy"---and it's the 21st century.

One time in a Ritz ad
One time in a Taco Bell ad
that's all I could remember.

UPDATE: from Wikipedia
  • "I Melt with You" was used in a Burger King commercial in the late 1990s
  • It was in an episode of the TV series Clueless in 1996.
  • In 2006, the song was used in a Ritz crackers commercial.
  • In 2007 and 2008, the song was used in commercials for both M&M's and Taco Bell.
  • That same year, GMC also featured the Nouvelle Vague cover in its GMC Acadia commercial.
  • T-Mobile played this song in their call centres if you were put on hold.
  • Also used in an episode of Mistresses, in a love scene between Alex and Lisa
  • The Nouvelle Vague cover was used in Grey's Anatomy Season 2, episode 8
  • A music video starring Fred Durst has appeared on YouTube
  • In August 2008, The Hershey Company began airing ads featuring the song as part of its "Pure Hershey's" campaign. Aardman Animations, creators of Wallace and Gromit, animated a commercial with morphing scenes of characters and scenery made in chocolate. A candy bar morphs into a puddle of chocolate. A drop of chocolate lands in the puddle giving rise to a girl on a swing who in turn dives off the swing back into the puddle. Morphing into the same girl with a male character at the wheel of a convertible, the couple head into the sunset with rabbits chasing after them. The scene closes morphing back into the original chocolate bar. The video appeared on YouTube entitled "Swing/Drive."
yep nothing makes you more happy than a song about the world being destroyed in a nuclear blast.

One good thing about TV-you could always turn it off

I remember the GMC commercial from last year or the year before, and there's the Hershey one on now.

Both are nauseating cover versions.

I HATE it when people take old songs and speed them up like in this commercial.  How ironic that a song that goes "I'll stop the world" is being played at 2x speed.
