Automatic mute for this one.  I was hoping this commercial would die, but they played it again tonight.  My ears hurt from this crap.  Seriously.  What kind of hare-brained hipster do you have to be to actually voluntarily listen to "music" like this?  More importantly, what  moronic media mogul decided it would make a good commercial?

Argh.  Vid didn't post.   <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/6XqXYzF4byQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>  But it is the one with all of the balloons, and I guess the "musical" "artist" is Blondfire.

Biff, what you want to do is take everything after the v= on the original link, and put a tube tags around it. You can quote my post to see what I mean.

Why does all indie music sound the same even though it's supposed to come from independent labels that by definition should have nothing to do with each other?

I'm sick of hearing it in car and phone commercials. I'm almost rather have rap used to promote products than indie crap at this point.

The only indie band I can say I actually enjoy listening to is Arctic Monkeys

Well, the thing is that - not being part of a major record label - it'll always be cheaper for companies to use, so there is probably some divide that is basically "Mindless stupid, ugly hippy pop" which is what we get stuck with in commercials, and then something that might be halfway acceptable. I mean...I'm sure I've heard at least five good songs released in the past ten years...

Well at least it's good ear bleach after listening to Owl City's Fireflies. God, that song was atrocious. It's still stuck in my head, it completely blocks out Dreams by Fleetwood Mac I've heard before that calamity.

I can't really complain about "indie" music because, as much as I've read about it, I still have no idea what it means.  When I was young, it usually meant punk or New Wave or underground music of some sort, but nowadays, it seems much less defined.

I've finally figured what that third small balloon was saying. I paused it at the right second and it reads "Civic FTW"

Thanks for posting the vid, Codtaro.  I couldn't locate the thread on how to do that last night, but now I see.  Yes, I freakin' hate this commercial.  My ears still hurt from hearing it last night.

Yeah, Arctic Monkeys sound nothing like that band from the commercial.

Yet, they are still classified as Indie. Go figure.

Near as I can tell, "Indie" is generally used as some sort of "catch-all" genre for music that doesn't rock hard enough to be considered regular "rock music"(and so that also obviously rules out metal or industrial), isn't twangy or country enough to be country, isn't jazzy or bluesy, isn't folksy enough to be folk, isn't dirty enough to be grunge, doesn't have the effects or electronics to be techno/dance/electronica, and isn't rapped so obviously not rap/hip hop. It used to be fairly interchangeable with "alternative", till that genre became popular then "indie" starting being applied to a different sort of music.

It doesn't really have anything to do with being "independent" or "non-mainstream", no matter what fans of the music claim. Take a band like Ouroboros, they self-published their own album, they certainly aren't mainstream or well known, but they consider themselves a tech death/thrash act, not an "indie" act. Same with Voyager, their debut was self produced, they mixed a lot of different styles, but they didn't consider themselves "indie", they were a prog metal act.

Melancholy in their cries
Devoid of all the passion
The human spirit cannot die"

^  When I first started hearing the term (around 1980), it referred to bands that were signed to small labels because the major ones didn't want them.  Then, it became a badge of honor.  After that, I lost track.

Now the term is essentially a synonym for soft rock with extra-unbearable vocals, most commonly used in lousy commercials made by ad executives who are too lazy to commission a real jingle.
