I keep seeing these ads when I play my favorite mobile games.
Maybe you've seen them - in the ad you see some kind of disaster scenario, and you are to make choices to avoid catastrophe. Sometimes it's a leaky faucet you can fix with either a wrench or a jackhammer. Sometimes you have to move levers to "help her escape" like in this screenshot:

Many of these ads include a playable demo, and the gameplay can be pretty silly and fun.

If you click through the ad to download the game, however, you're in for a surprise.

Because you'll get an entirely different game. A Candy-Crush-like match-three-in-a-row puzzle game.

That's right - the ad shows gameplay, and has a playable demo, of a game that doesn't exist.

Homescapes (and its sequel game, Gardenscapes) can boast that it has huge download numbers, and can call itself "popular", but the downloads are based on 100% false advertising.

I'm not even sure how this is legal at all!

Have any of you had this experience?

I've seen something very much like this on my PC. Not sure what site I was on and I have not seen it since.

I play Homescapes - and these dumb adds pop up all the time - I can tell you that its a Rick Roll - the downloadable game has none of the above - its a home design game - one which sometimes to get past a level I occasionly end up spending money (yikes!) not much tho - I prefer the free tokens.

I've seen these kinds of ads with so many different games so many times, it's not funny. I really don't understand how the companies making/allowing deceptive ads like these have been able to get away with it for so long.

Also, an update pertaining to Homescapes and Gardenscapes, two of their Facebook ads got banned in the UK by the Advertising Standards Authority for their misleading nature. (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/technology-54509970)

I have fallen for this same ploy a couple of times and have been disappointed. The latest one I fell for was the Fishdom mini-games that looked like fun - quick little games to pass the time. Only, the game was the full Fishdom matching game and the mini games were supplemental. Nope! Not gonna play!

I fell for the same same horse puckey for Fishdom as well not that long ago.
I played the actual Fishdom matching game a year or two ago, and quit playing after timers were added to levels (I hate those fucking things)  but downloaded the game again a few nights ago because the ads for it were showing the cool little mini-games.

Big waste of bungwipe...er...uh...phone memory!!!
I was "treated" to the Fishdom match game (which was more difficult than the original); the mini-games were offered only sporadically as you played the match games.

So after less than a day I used Easy Uninstaller and watched happily as Fishdom whirled down the shitbowl. Big smile
