It is bad enough that they are flooding the TV and the internet with obviously extremely biased non partisan ads.  That I could almost deal with because I would just briefly channel surf until the ad is over.  Now it has gone to an even more annoying level.  I keep getting robocalls over and over and over again that are obviously done by these organizations.  Some of them pretend to be a survey but they are skewed towards one side or the other.  The problem is that they don't even have an option to talk to some real person to tell you to put them on a do not call list.

As this election years goes on we are going to have to put up with more and more of this crap.  They have so much money to throw into pointless ad campaigns that won't change people's minds and now then the robocalls is even worse.  What a waste of money.

I hate what politics have become.

I just purchased a Telephone (With Caller ID) and a DETACHABLE RECORDER. If the phone rings and I don't know the number I disconnect the machine so it cannot play its message. Yes, it's only going to get worse until the Election is over. I read that by the end of summer Political Messages will comprise nearly THREE QUARTERS of Radio and Television Ads. Angry But I have my CDs to listen to and my DVDs to watch, so IMHO LET THEM EAT CAKELOL

Pro tip: most automated dialers (robocallers) take a phone number off their lists if a call is answered with the 3-tone "this number is disconnected" sound. Put it on a digital voice recorder or other such device, and play it first when you pick up a call from an unknown number.

This is a borderline Political Forum topic, but I guess since it involves commercials, we'll let you live. Wink

But as to the topic, thank the right wing conservatives on the US Supreme court, Chief "Justice" Roberts in particular, for their idiotic ruling in the Citizen's United case that opened the flood gates for unlimited amounts of money in politics by ruling that corporations are people & as such have the right to free speech, then making the even more incredulous leap in ruling that money = free speech.

That decision was the genesis of the super pac. It was also calculated. Because giant corporations are the ones who have the huge amounts of money to spend on buying political influence, & that because giant corporations almost universally favor Republican candidates, this ruling will give Republicans an unfair advantage in elections, especially in local congressional districts where a few million could easily swing a race in one candidates favor.

Appointing that f**king dirtbag sellout corpwhore Roberts was just one more in a list of ways Bush screwed this country right in the ass.

Wasn't Obama the one who, in 2008, opted out of the publically-financed campaign system?  And doesn't he now have quite a few Super Pacs of his own, most notably Priorities USA?

You can call his flip-flops on this issue pragmatic but, nevertheless, they're flip-flops, driven by whatever's most politically expedient for him.

I don't blame him.  Fight fire with fire.  But it kinda makes his criticism of Citizens United a few years ago, seem hypocritical.

Obama's super pacs are chump change compared with Romney's.

Thirty two BILLIONAIRES have contributed to Romney super pacs with Las Vegas casino owner Sheldon Adelson being the most recent 10 million dollar donor.

But I'm glad that you at least understand why Obama needs to raise so much money.

I doubt that he wants to, but in order to be competitive, he HAS to.

And that is directly attributable to the CU decision.

Nevertheless, it sounds like you're against Citizens United, not based on principle, but based on the fact that your side isn't the winner in that.

Oh well, you guys have Hollywood and Obama's $35,000/plate fundraisers.

That's the stupidest, most ridiculous thing you've said yet.

A.) CU is destroying true, representative democracy in this country by putting election results up for sale to those who can afford, by virtue of corporate/billionaire funded PACs, to swamp the other side with advertising. As John McCain said the other day, in a small district congressional race where neither candidate has a lot of money, but one of them represents the side of an issue favorable to people who can contribute huge sums of money, it would be easy for the one with all the financial backing to beat the other, simply because of all the negative ads that could be run against his opponent by the PAC supporting him, that his opponent could not even respond to.

B.) Most, though obviously not all, of the people who have donated to Obama are regular average people. As I posted above, Forbes magazine just ran a story about how Sheldon Adelson, the Las Vegas casino mogul, has just joined the list of 32 BILLIONAIRES who've contributed huge sums of money ($10 million in this case) to a PAC intent on buying victory for Mitt Romney.

Do you think these people are not gonna want something in return???????

Obama may be pretty successful at fundraising for his own campaign fund, but when it comes to super PACs who can run ads for their guy & against their guys's opponent, the Republicans are miles & miles ahead. There is no
comparison. Self interested corporations with a financial stake in who wins are almost exclusively donating to Romney
supporting PACs.

And while hopefully not sounding too melodramatic here, I've gotta ask... How f**king DARE you accuse me of only caring about my side winning???? Especially when this unbelievably idiotic, INSANE decison by the right wing, money-sucking corpwhores on the conservative side of the USSC, has basically succeeded in selling out MY government to those who can afford to buy it, upon which they will own it & be able to do whatever they want with it.
can't believe you don't find that both offensive AND disturbing. But I guess because it's your side doing it, it's OK.

I think the kind of pettiness you just ascribed to me is likely more characteristic of YOUR way of thinking.

And if you can't see the potential for utter DISASTER over the CU decision, then you either have your eyes squeezed shut on purpose, or you are just plain f**king dense.

Sorry to say that, but it had to be said.

My entire point is that all this money is being put into ads...commercials on TV, radio, online, and robocalls.  Most voters have pretty much all made up their mind.  Politics are so divided on the extreme right or left side  the days.  Super PACs flood money into these ads and if you watch something like a news channel especially, they are running all the time.  I consider myself a moderate and no "I endorse this message" is going to really make me vote either way.

In the U.S. we are going to be totally bombarded by these ads until November.  I don't care if you are are a Democrat, a Republican, or an Independent, this should be something that you recognize as being a major problem.  It is something totally different than most ad campaigns.

It keeps getting worse with every passing year. In 2004 I began questioning WHY was I subscribing to a Pay-TV Service, at the time it seemed every other ad was an "Attack Ad" that INSULTED my Intelligence. Angry Of course, three other ads made their debut that year, and these were the ones that tipped me "over the edge", resulting in me finally "cutting the cord".

I'm glad I went the route I did. Since I don't watch "Appointment" TV anymore I can only imaging what it's like out there, it must be Evil Smile HCensoredLL Evil Smile watching TV right now (especially if you reside in a "Battleground" State), and will be until the Election takes place. I don't blame those who resort to using DVRs and other Recording Devices to get past these things. Others, such as me, have resorted to "Other Sources" to get around these monstrosities. I wish I ran a Video Store, if I did I'd place an Ad in my local Newspaper saying something like, Tired of being BOMBARDED with Politics?" Ouch I'd then state the fact on how they expect 70-75 % of all the Commercials to be Political by the end of summer, and then something like "Guess what? You don't have to watch them!" An array of Both Modern and Classic DVD Box Sets would be displayed, along with their sales prices.

RE: the above two posts.... all beside the point.

The truth is that political ads DO WORK.

And the people who can buy enough of them to swamp their opponents can, in many cases, buy an election.

It's not automatic, but it certainly gives whichever candidate is the beneficiary of hundreds of millions of dollars in PAC money a distinct advantage. Especially in small, congressional district races.

I would love to see it proven this fall that all the PAC money supporting Romney made no difference in the end.

Thank God for the internet & social media for being there to lessen the impact of TV ads.

I DVR a lot of shows, but sometimes I watch stuff like the news in real time.  Then you can't fast forward through the ads.  When you watch shows via OnDemand you can't fast forward through the commercials.  My intent wasn't to make this a Left Vs. Right argument, but just to say the political ads are taking over the various marketing outlets.  It has been escalating at a huge rate.  You now get a crapload of local, state, and national political ads running.  All these Super PACs (no matter who they support) could be investing this money into things that make a real difference.

That last statement is sad but true.

Just think of the good that could be done with all that money that is instead just going into the pockets of TV networks.

But, I don't think the vast majority of TV viewers are using TiVo or other types of DVR technology to insulate themselved from these ads.

Most people get constatnt exposure to them & many wind up being influenced by them as well.

It's a sad state of affairs.

Giant profit-sucking corporations are "people" & their money = "free speech". ShockedShocked

Who ever heard of anything so absurd?

The overwhelming majority of SuperPac commercials I see in Omaha are conservative/Republican. Whatever the left/right position, an imbalance is unfair to the voter, who only sees one side of the story. Sure, we voters should research issues and candidates ourselves, but separating good info from the crap is like driving in an unfamiliar city without a map.

I ran across a site worth checking out: www.factcheck.org. They ferret out the f-ups and distortions of superPAC and candidate ads. Nobody it seems is fighting truly "clean."

It seems like all politicians suck.  It's just a matter of voting for who sucks the least anymore.

South Park hit it right on the head in an episode where the school is voting for a new team mascot, and the choices are between a "giant douche" and a "turd sandwich."  If that doesn't describe America's two-party system "choice," I don't know what does.
Reader, suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress. But I repeat myself.

I don't vote partisan. I vote for whoever I think is the best for our nation. However I would now vote for the Devil himself if he was running against Obama! I spent 30 years in the military trying to keep the communists from taking over. I will not willingly allow a president to destroy our constitution and let the country I have defended be given to the (communist) New World Order!
