They used a vocoder-like device like Cher used in 2008. :-/
At least, that's what it sure sounds like to me.

Annoying as all hell. I can't believe that anyone would use that auto-tune crap in music, or that anyone would want to willingly listen. And whose idiotic idea was it to put it in a BEER commercial?

Auto-tune and a vocoder are not the same thing, although they both impart a synthetic, "robot" quality to a voice. The Cher track (Do you believe in life after love) was actually one of the first tracks to use Auto-tune as an effect and not simply to keep warbly vocalists on pitch. The poor guy that invented auto-tune never intended it to be used that way. A vocoder is a different and much older technology. Basically, it combines the "timbre" of one audio signal (typically a human voice) on another audio signal, usually an electronic synthesizer. This is the sound you hear in some 80's funk songs. |
