I have joked around with my wife about this, we know the days for our beloved dog Leah are numbered.

Would it be weird if I took her to a taxidermist? You know, use her as a lawn ornament just to scare the neighbors. Embarrassed

I've heard of people doing that with their pets before.

If that's what one feels would honor the memory of their old friend, there's nothing wrong with it, but I personally wouldn't.

If it were me, I'd find a nice shady spot in the back yard beneath my favorite tree, take the time to dig a nice, neat rectangular hole about 3' deep then line the bottom with a few inches of clean white sand to help keep her clean and stave off the moisture and help keep the roots out.

Next, I'd wrap her body in a large, clean white towel, place her gently in the hole then maybe have a little goodbye ceremony with the wife. Finally, cover her with more white sand then fill the dirt back in.

Maybe put a patio stone on top as a marker.

That's what I did with both of my cats who died a few years ago.

Just seems more respectful of her memory to me.

But as I said, other people might see it differently.

After Killer was put to death and I brought his body home, I took a few pics.  I've rarely looked at those pics.  They do nothing for me or to me.  I look at them blankly.  Killer's not even there.  He's there in his living pics, but not in the dead ones.  All I see is a thing.

Anyway, my point is "do whatever you want".  Your memories and pictures will be what matters.  I chose to bury Killer (Sneakers, too) in my backyard.  Now, they're in someone else's backyard.  No big deal.

Leave it to Jimbo and Thor to get all serious and sensible on me.
I don't think my wife would EVER allow me to preserve and display our old girl Leah.

The last time I had to put a dog down, I had to get out of the house for a few days to avoid things that reminded me of her.

My dauchy family are now inside finely-polished mahogany box book-ends, which also can be used as paperweights. Cheaper to keep, a lot more quiet, but awfully useful...and I still miss them, but I see them every day.

I find myself thinking about how my Mickey and Mal are now 15 years old.  They've been with me since I was in my mid-40s.  It's going to be tough when they go.  They're as bonded to me as I am to them, and mean the world to me.  It's hard to think that that bond will be over all too soon.

I also think about me croaking before them.  Rocco would do fine, but the older guys would be lost.  Mickey would be especially devastated without me.  I'm the only person in the world he's ever gotten close to.  Whenever anyone comes over, he hides.  Always been that way.  He's not gonna change.

Most of Griz's 110 pounds is in a can the size of a Progresso soup, that can inside a photo box with photos of he and I, that box on a bookshelf in the office with his last collar sitting on top. The remaining remains, hence the "most of" are in one of those little nitro glycerine pill thingies people keep on their keychain.. wear as a necklace.. whatever, and that's on his First puppy collar and hanging from the mirror of my truck. I see him every day, and everywhere I go (in the truck anyway) he goes. There are instructions in my will that his ashes are to be buried with me. Similar arrangements will be made for Appa when his time comes.. assuming I outlive him.. and all who follow him.

I remember a story not all that long ago where someone had it in their will that their healthy dog was to be put down so that it could be buried with the deceased.. people fought it, not sure who won.

So yeah, diff'rent strokes. But I wouldn't put her outside, she might get pretty funky. Poses her with teeth bared and hackles up and put her in the front window or entryway if you go with the statue option.

Someone studied history, I see.
What you describe once was a common practice, but often included family members and the servants, along with little Bosco.
