I just watched this video where a cute Jack Russell Terrier could count. Her owner asked her what 2x3 was, and she tapped her paw on the table 6 times.
HOW DO THEY FREAKING TEACH THAT??
I taught my cat to sit, but that is the extent of my knowledge.

You taught your cat to sit? That's impressive. The only thing we could teach our cats to do is how to get us to feed them whenever they want.
But seriously, maybe they taught the dog to tap X number of times after pointing at it and then asked the question. Like holding your hand palm down gets the dog to lie down. |

The dog does not really count, it just responds to the individual math problems as a voice command and remembers the "number" of times to tap each one out.

Well, the thing is that (this was the Animal Planet show Pet Star) the judges asked the dog other math problems that he had not heard before and he got them all right. It still confuses me.

Ha thanks. He was a surprisingly adept pupil.
You can do it too, it's actually easy.
All you need is your most patient/stupid cat (because often times the stupidest cat is actually the easiest to teach. The smart ones are like, "Well, I never. I'm not going to whore myself out, not even for tasty treats.") and some cat treats. Or cat food.
You just have the cat stand in front of you and gently push his butt downward so that he naturally assumes the sitting position. You say "Sit." and give him a treat. Do that a few times, and then every time he sits after that, give him a treat. Eventually he'll start to catch on. Make sure he sees you have a treat, then say "sit." If he does, say "Good sit!" and give him the treat. Easy peasy.
