The sky near my house is black because the homes a few blocks down from us are on fire. They (local fire department) think it started as a grass fire. They are telling us that we have nothing to worry about but to just stay alert and pay attention to what is happening. It seems like half of the f**king state of Califormia is on fire right now, and now it seems to have creeped into my own backyard. It was a beautiful day with clear skies and now the sun is completely blocked and it lookes like we're about to have a rain storm, except it's just all the smoke. ::sigh:: Also, my cat has been acting sick. The other day she was walking across the floor and all of the sudden lost the ability to walk in a straight line. She looked like she may have hurt her paw. Then she tried eating but was shaking so bad that she couldn't chew the food. I took it away from her so she wouldn't choke. Then, a few hours later, she seemed fine. In the last couple of years she's lost a lot of weight, and although she doesn't look too thin, she is still much thinner than she used to be. She seems tired, all she does is lounge around all day and eat, sleep and go to the bathroom. I'm not sure if it's just old age (she's 13) or if it's the heat. She's had these incidents where she starts having spasms and looses control of her legs and paws momentarily, but after a few minutes she's ok. Are they seizsures? I really don't know. (It's happened a couple of times this year). This recent occurence seemed to be the worst so far, as it took her longer to recover from it. I'm not sure what to do. Some people told me to take her to the vet, others said that they aren't going to be able to tell me much. If something were to happen to her right now, between everything else that's going on, I might just have a nervous breakdown. I really can't take much more. I consider myself a strong person, but eveyone has their limits, and I'm getting close to mine. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated, as I know many of you have cats. Thanks...Bunny

Sunny, I'd take her to the vet. She may be having seizures, and there may be a way to medicate her. The weight loss is something to look into as well; unless you have drastically changed her diet, weight loss usually means something's going on with her.
Don't be scared - just take her in and be honest. It could be something very simple.

SunnyHunny, hang in there! Where in California are you? Luckily, we in San Francisco don't get the fires that seem to happen everywhere else. (Well, unless you count after the Great Earthquake of 1906.) The closest we've come was in 1991, with the huge Oakland Hills fire.
I would take the cat to the vet, definitely. As MrsHill says, it might be something easy to fix. |

Sunny, we had a heatwave up here about a month ago. It was suddenly 100+ degrees. My cat Mickey didn't want to do anything but lay there. I'd pick him up, and he'd just lay right back down. His breathing also seemed fast. I set up an appointment with the vet, but by the end of the day, he started to come around. The next day (cooler temps), he was fine. I surmised it was the sudden onset of the heat that did this to him.
Still, I'd get an appointment for your cat.

I feel for you Sunny. It is almost harder to support family when there is really nothing you can do than it is to be going through it yourself. I know I am the type of person that likes to be able to fix things. I couldn't imagine being helpless. It does sound like your kitty is having seizures, I know it is hard to take her to the vet because you must be thinking the worst, however, even if you can't help her, at least if you know what it is and what is causing it should give you some peace of mind. Just remember that he will never give you more than you can handle. I will be thinking of you. |
