Every law enforcement show is the exact duplicate of the other....it just seems that way. Cop shows 20 years ago had grit, not-so-attractive characters, each character had a personality not everyone is a stereotype, the current cultural trend was only a taste in the background. It can be taken seriously...it used drama and a well-written script. Today cop dramas makes Cop Rock and the latter seasons of Miami Vice look like Shakespeare. First off, they characters are stereotypical jock douchebags if they're male cops, that is, with more in common with Spencer Pratt and John Mayer. The females are have more in common with Snookie, the QVC broads and the Kardashsians with a snotty bitch voice only a letcherous modeling agency could love. The settings are clean/antiseptic and exaggerated. The police station on Miami Vice is plain and dirty-looking where CSI/H50/Cold Case looks like something out of the Mall of America!!! No police station looks that clean....PLEASE! No cop patrols in a Hummer-H2 (Tubbs and Crockett uesd the Ferrari for undercover work in case you are wondering) Said cops, TJ Hooker, Logan and Briscoe, etc did not live in fantasy land where everyone normal is fair-skinned, beautiful and rich, while criminals are usually minorities and the poor. Yesterday's cops sounded tougher...acted tougher!!
What about today? Hell, they don't even sound tough! They sound as threatening as sissy-ass Day Trader in Greenwich or someone's f*cking yoga coach. These are COPS...not INTERIOR DECORATORS on a reality show!!! Speaking of which, police station's do not have up-to-the-minute 21st century technology touch-screen monitors like a James Bond movie! In closing, today's cop shows need macho men strong women who don't look like Paris Hilton. Ditch this emo/pretty boy I wear flip-flops to Whole Foods after Tai-Chi class type guys! Today's cop shows need gritty city streets not a clean yuppie subdivision! Stop with this gentrified urban sh*t!

I have to laugh every time I look at this thread, because it reminds me of that damn Paula Cole song, Where Have All the Cowboys Gone, as in: Where is my T.J. Hooker? Where is my gritty slum? Where is my freeze-frame ending? Where have all the cop shows gone? *duh-doo-doo, duh-doo-doo, duh-doo-doo, duh-doo-doo*. Eff-Bee-Aye, Cee-Aye-Eh, Eff-Bee-Aye, Cee-Ay-Eh.

why watch crime shows when you can just look out your window & see the real thing? haha!
This week we had some mensa 19 y/o steal a car, get into a high speed chase, crash into another vehicle, sending his into a lake. At that point, he SWAM away, & stole another car (a jaguar, no less) on the other side of the lake. The kid's not a quitter, I'll give him that..

Your point is close to mine. I think the show COPS pretty much replaced all drama cop shows. How can you compete with the real thing?

Where have all the cops shows gone
That used to be quality
The ones that weren't drek spawn
And weren't so sissy
The answer my friend is they're blowin' in the wind
The answer is if the new ones blow they'll never make it to synd(ication)
(Can't mangle it much worse than Bob Dylan did.... )

The Sleuth channel on DirecTV used to air a bunch of cop shows from the 80s (A-Team, Magnum, and my personal favorite, Simon & Simon). There was always a good chase or action scene (complete with a Mike Post* electric guitar riff ), but there was also a plot, and realistic characters who seemed like everyday people. I just don't see the cops of today living on a houseboat, beachfront shack, or a cruddy studio apartment...
As for dialogue, the one-liners were meant in good humor, not snark. The episodes usually ended with a cheesy wisecrack, then a freeze-frame of the reaction...either a hearty laugh or mock dismay at the joke victim's expense... *He didn't do Simon & Simon, but you get my point. However, TV could use a little more Mike Post...he made TV fun in the 80s... |

I've just never been a fan with a few exceptions, so believable police shows vs. unbelievable police shows are kind of a rock and a hard place to me. That doesn't mean I don't sympathize, but I'm really far removed from the whole thing. (Except when I'm at certain people's houses and they plant me on the sofa in front of a forensics show marathon or COPS marathon - then it's my problem. But again, believable and unbelievable - and fictional and non-fictional - are all the same difference to me when it comes to cop shows.)

You can find The A-Team (and Miami Vice) on the CTRC Channel these days. In my Comcast lineup, that channel is up there in the 400s on the proverbial dial with VH1 Classic and other, more music-based channels. CTRC is probably there as they used to run a lotta Soul Train reruns.

I usually give up in the 300s unless I'm really bored. I loved Simon & Simon, too. There was also Hunter and Mike Hammer. |

Yeah, I usually go from the 100s directly to the 270s, where the Hitler Channel and the Military Channel reside.

You get broadcasts from Idaho?...
~~~
The 'Centric' channel is showing 'Miami Vice' reruns...watched one the other morning - couldn't believe I ever liked the show, but once upon a time, I never missed it.
~~~
My favorites used to be the "1/2-cop" shows, like 'The Rockford Files'.

I just wish he weren't making that up. Because most of what people hate, I like, and without the "so bad it's good" part even figuring into it. Throw in Charles In Charge, It's About Time and Heaven's Gate (the movie, not the suicide cult), and I'm there.

Well, I watch the Lawrence Welk Show reruns on occasion...and I enjoy them 'cause I'm a dork. Saturday's show was hosted by Bobby Burgess, and was a rerun of a show from about 1980. Not my favorite era. I'd have preferred anything from the 50s up to the early 70s.

Thanks. It was odd how it just popped in my head. I wonder if that happens to every song "Weird Al" does? |

The networks have become so regulated that not cop show, or action can thrive on broadcast TV anymore. But as a trade off, the politicians running the big cities give you the equivalent of a 'reality crime show' on a daily basis.

up to the early 70s.
One of my biggest periods for TV. Of course, in my case, Saturday night early ' 70s TV means Carol Burnett followed by monster movies, but I saw plenty of Lawrence Welk in a passing way. |
