A long time ago (oh, maybe 15 years or so), a teenager did this and it made me laugh so hard I was doubled over. She put her face against car window with her mouth open, and blew. (The car was not moving, and she was outside; I was inside. The air came out the sides of her mouth, and against the window, it was really very funny. Gross-looking, but funny.
Some time later, while I was still smoking, I had taken my son and a friend of his to a pizza place. I was finished and went outside to have a cigarette, while the two boys were still eating. Left up to my own devices, and being the clown that I am, I did the trick against the pizza place's window, but with the addition of smoking coming out the sides of my mouth against the window. My son laughed pretty hard. But his friend was laughing so hard--and ew, the thought is just nauseating me now--that a long, thick string of cheese came out of his nose. It was disGUSting. But funny. He was still laughing, while David and I were totally grossed out. |

Jimbo,
Shrewish? Do you have kids? If not, go talk to a pediatrician. You don't raise body temp when you have a fever. You lower ir. As for Thor's gig about the cayenne pepper; yes it does have some validity because the pepper kills pathogens much the way certain meds target cancer cells. It does not, however raise your body temp. But then I guess putting a heatstroke victim in the sun is a good idea as is putting a person suffering from hypothermia into a meat locker. C'mon sense ring any bells?

Geez 2 pages about snot and vomit.....ick
Meinga, Faith and Mrs Hill,
I am better now..no diareahea any more..but still coughing....I hear it takes awhile to get rid of the coughing. This flu def likes to mess with your respitory system. There was in the beginning days of the flu a couple of days where breathing was a little bit belaboured. The coughing gets a little better each day.
Prometheus - was right about the heat...I finally gave in and got the heating pad out due to the cold and hot chills in the beginning where driving me nuts...the heating pad did the trick!!!!
I hope none of you get it...the flu is NEVER EVER FUN! And our workplaces don't even shut down...dang...school kids are so lucky
oh and it was me that mentioned the SILVER DRAGEES in another thread...(that are now illegal in CA due to some idiot lawyer)

Hey... disagree with him all you want to. Tell him where you think he's mistaken. I just thought the tone of the reaction by a few people was totally uncalled for.
I hope everyone remembers it the next time I get accused of being overly caustic to people for no reason.
And I don't believe I used the word "shrewish".
But, as to the central point of the whole argument..... as I said, I know sweating out an early stage cold works because I've done it before.

Yeah.... "diagree".
It means being diametrically opposed to agreement.
I thought everybody knew that.

Jimbo,
When you call a female shrill, vindictive and emasculating amongst other man-hating, mean -spirited adjectives, shrewish pretty much sums it up. The only people that agreed with Prometheus on this thread are the ones that never had to deal with taking children to the pediatrician or emergency room because they were burning up with fever.
Prome and I have made amends, but that doesn't mean that he is right and as far as name calling and belittling go, that seems to be standard fare on this site, even though everybody knows that you've never succumbed to it.
Home made remedies that work for certain adults with certain ailments aren't necessarily safe for children, small women nor are they condoned by people in the medical profession. Prome may not have meant harm, but his theories as gospel could prove harmful.
He also assumed that I was a right-wing conspiracy nut, which he retracted. As for meinga, she was affronted by his tone and attack on Pa. Hilly, Holly and Faith disagreed with his medical remedies and tone (all mothers, BTW) and Ad didn't appreciate the name calling either. Oh yeah, Irish and I are also being characterized together as being sociopaths. It might be a bit more diplomat to do some research on who you're fencing with. I don't care whether you like my personality, agree with my politics or lack thereof, but if you want to insult me, man-hating, sociopathic and right wing nut are amongst the few things that don't have any validity.

Who said you were? The reply included the number of people that disagreed with him and were offended and then shot down. I never said you called me a sociopath or a right wing nut, Jimbo, but you did just state that the ladies who posted should just go home and emasculate their husbands and that you are sure they ( the husbands) are used to it. Was that meant to help matters?

Nope, just using a little comparatively mild sarcasm to make a point.
I figured given the level of the prevailing discourse, how could it possibly be considered worse?
I also figured that those who were dishing it out with such unbridled enthusiasm ought to be able to take a little too.

The REAL DEAL being sent to business in Western New York
Guidance on Preventing Transmission of Novel Influenza A H1N1 (swine flu) infection in the Workplace
Since, no one knows exactly how Novel Influenza A H1N1 (swine flu) virus will spread in the future, employers should be familiar with simple measures to reduce the risk of infection in the workplace and prepare for impact of illness on their operations. This guidance is not intended for health care settings; guidance for health care workers is available at www.cdc.gov/H1N1n1flu/. What is the Novel Influenza A H1N1 (swine flu) virus? Novel Influenza A H1N1 (swine flu) virus is a respiratory infection caused by influenza viruses. There have been reports of serious illness and death due to Novel Influenza A H1N1 (swine flu) virus in Mexico, but most of the recently confirmed cases in the United States have been mild and no more serious than seasonal influenza. How is the Novel Influenza A H1N1 (swine flu) virus spread? Human transmission is thought to occur in the same way as seasonal flu: through respiratory droplets that are released when an infected person coughs or sneezes. These droplets can infect people in close proximity. Who is at risk of contracting Novel Influenza A H1N1 (swine flu) virus? Anyone who has contact with an infected person may be exposed to Novel Influenza A H1N1 (swine flu) virus. Influenza is most contagious while the infected person is experiencing fever and/or cough. What are the symptoms of Novel Influenza A H1N1 (swine flu) virus? Novel Influenza A H1N1 (swine flu) virus symptoms appear to be similar to those of seasonal flu and usually include fever accompanied by cough, sore throat, fatigue, headache, body aches, lethargy, stuffy nose or chills. Some affected people have also reported diarrhea and vomiting. What are tips for preventing illness in the workplace? Most important: remind employees that they should not come to work if they have flu symptoms (fever and cough) and not return until 24 hours after symptoms resolve.
Encourage employees to avoid touching their eyes, nose or mouth; and to wash their hands before eating, after using the bathroom and any time hands are soiled. If a workplace lacks soap and running water, an alcohol-based hand sanitizer containing
Erie County Department of Health Anthony J. Billittier IV, MD, FACEP – Commissioner of Health May 14, 2009 60% to 95% alcohol is a good substitute. Good hand hygiene is the best protection against contact with the virus on surfaces or other people’s hands. What precautions can help prevent the spread of the Novel Influenza A H1N1 (swine flu) virus in offices and public places? No special precautions are needed, but buildings managers and owners should enforce good maintenance practices: Make sure all hand washing facilities are equipped with adequate hand soap andHand drying facilities (disposable towels and/or electric dryer). In the restaurant and food service businesses, change gloves and wash hands after handling money. Clean surfaces that people touch often, such as doorknobs, door handles, handrails, elevator controls, steering wheels of shared vehicles and telephones, as well as surfaces in bathrooms cafeterias and offices. There is currently no evidence to suggest that special vacuuming equipment or procedures are necessary. Upholstery, carpets, drapes and vertical surfaces don’t require special cleaning unless they are visibly soiled.
Advise employees and building visitors to wash their hands frequently, and to cover their coughs. Posting signs can be helpful.
Keep all heating and ventilation systems in good working order in accordance with system specifications and any applicable regulations. What kind of cleaners should be used for cleaning surfaces? The Novel Influenza A H1N1 (swine flu) virus can be killed with common household or commercial detergents and disinfectants. Use general cleaners or soap and water. As an added precaution, disinfectants can be used on frequently contacted surfaces. If hard surfaces are visibly dirty, clean first using general cleaner or soap and water. After surface has been cleaned, apply disinfectant following product instructions.
Disinfectant wipes can also be used to clean small surfaces. Discard wipes after using them.
If disinfectants are not available, use a chlorine bleach solution made by adding one (1) tablespoon of bleach to a quart (4 cups) of water. Discard the bleach solution after using it. Never mix bleach with cleaning products because hazardous vapors can be created. For additional information on the EPA’s list of registered disinfectants and antimicrobial products see http://www.epa.gov/oppad001/influenza-disinfectants.html. Should workers take precautions when cleaning? Workplace safety and health programs should train all cleaning staff on the safe use of cleaning and disinfectant products.
When using disinfectants and cleaners, cleaning staff should read and follow the directions on the label. Worker should wear gloves as instructed when mixing or spraying cleaning products, and should remove gloves when moving from one work area to the next.
Bleach and other cleaning solutions should be discarded after use.
Cleaning products should not be stored in unlabeled containers.
Cleaning staff should wash hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer after all cleaning activities. What should I tell employees who have flu-like symptoms? Employees with flu-like symptoms, such as fever (temperature above 100 degrees Fahrenheit) and cough, should stay home. Anyone with severe symptoms should seek health care and treatment immediately. In adults, symptoms that warrant emergency medical attention include: Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen Sudden dizziness Confusion Severe or persistent vomitingHow long should employees with flu-like illness remain home from work? The Erie County Department of Health recommends that people stay home until they have been free of symptoms for 24 hours. Employers should consider having telecommuting options for employees who need to stay home. Should employees with flu-like symptoms get a flu test before returning to work? No. Employees who are feeling well can return to work 24 hours after symptoms resolve. There is no need to test them for an absence of influenza. Should employees who have traveled to Mexico be excluded from work? No. Travelers returning to Erie County from an area of the world affected by the Influenza A H1N1 (swine-like) virus do not need to be excluded from work if they are feeling well (no fever or cough).Should companies restrict business travel to prevent Novel Influenza A H1N1 (swine flu) virus? Currently, the Centers for Disease Control and the Homeland Security Office is advising people to avoid non-essential travel to Mexico. What information should I share with employees? Communicating good hygiene and infection-control practices will help keep your workforce healthy. Employers can use websites, hotlines, and posters to inform workers about the symptoms and spread of influenza, and to encourage good hygiene. Early and active communication can also help prevent fear and anxiety during an outbreak. Employers should be wary of rumors about Novel Influenza A H1N1 (swine flu) infection in employees or elsewhere. For timely information online, Novel Influenza A H1N1 (swine flu) virus, visit the Erie County Department of Health website at www.erie.gov/health/swine_flu.asp. When should I contact the Department of Health? Contact the Department of Health to report a cluster of flu-like illnesses (fever and cough) that occur in employees who work in close contact. You can contact the department’s Office of Epidemiology and Surveillance at 716-858-7697. There is no need to report individual cases of flu-like illness. When should I close down my office? Thus far there has been no need for U.S. employers to close down businesses or offices to prevent the spread of Novel Influenza A H1N1 (swine flu) virus. How can I plan ahead for a pandemic? Think about how you would run your business if a large share of your employees was absent. Consider the impact that school closures could have. Make contingency plans, such as allowing telecommuting or staggered shifts. You should also review your sick-leave policies and consider how they would affect employees who become ill. For more information on how businesses can plan for large disease outbreaks, visit the following website: www.pandemicflu.gov/plan/workplaceplanning/index.html Questions? Visit the Erie County Department of Health’s Website at www.erie.gov/health Or Call the LOCAL Novel Influenza A H1N1 (swine flu) Hotline

I don't know of anyone who's had this flu around my area. But something weird...our state gov't is eyebrow-deep in an economic and budget crisis, and in the middle of all this, suddenly every state agency has to stop what it's doing and develop a detailed h1n1 pandemic response plan.
Basically, it's a plan to continue citizen services by working from home if state offices are closed due to the flu pandemic.
After 30 years in government, I'm used to doing stupid surveys, reports, etc. ad nauseum, but the folks running the planning operation are very, very, serious about this. They sound like they're getting ominous briefings from the feds--CDC, FEMA, etc. We're being told to plan on multiple 30-day waves of significant absenteeism, and if the absentee rate reaches a certain percent, the state offices close.
Staff doing critical functions must work from home (via internet); a limited number--like two or three people per floor in our office building--may be allowed to work in the office, as long as they spread out and don't work close to each other.
That, by the way, is called "social distancing" in our planning lingo. Most of the cute girls I knew in high school and college were adept at social distancing, at least where I was concerned.
