Google. They are one of the biggest offenders. Put in a search term, and you get slammed with sites claiming to sell you the thing you are seeking information on because the gooogle engine directs the search terms to advertisers' sites, giving them priority over the actually relevant sites you are looking for, e.g. searching for 'spectrum frequencies' gets you ad links like "Save up to 75% on spectrum frequencies at Target!"

Yeah, and it's always Target, too.
The stupid Target link appears for everything, no matter whether Target sells it or not. Look for a manifold gasket for a '96 Chevy and you'll get a link that says "Save up to 75% on manifold gaskets at Target!". |

What's the deal with those annoying scary popups that say your phone/computer is infected or that it will cause your battery to discharge etc. contact....It shows a mechanical looking thing that looks like Rosy the maid from the Jetsons. Lets see how fast these cancers are eradicated. I imagine some Nigerian or Eastern European punks getting off on flim flaming and ripping us off.

I hate when those things pop up too. I remember going on Google to check if those things are legitimate and I found a website warning people that these pop ups are scams. A person on that website said something like, "I fell for this scam on my home computer and it gave me a virus and made my computer crash instead of helping it. I fell for the scam again on my cellphone and actually pressed " Click to install, " and my anti virus software on my phone caught on to the scam immediately and rejected the virus scam. You would think I would have learned my lesson from falling for the same scam that caused my home computer to crash, but no. If if weren't for my anti virus software on my phone the scam would have crashed my cellphone too. I can't believe I fell for the same scam twice." |

Donathan, don't feel bad. Several years ago on my old laptop, I got some kind of popup and fell for it. Instead of a virus, I called the numbed and of course foreigners said all will be well. $300 some bucks later, found out it was a rip-off. The foreign teckies installed software that were free trial versions. Co?puter was faster 4 a couple of days. The free sw were trial versions. Long story short, I just stuck with Dell tech support and all was well. Periodically, saud foreign flim flam men call. I ignore the calls and reported them.

I have 2 adblockers, a pop-up blocker, a browser antivirus that prevents redirecting, a personal firewall, a network firewall, & a real-time antivirus. I haven't gotten a virus since Windows 98.
