R&B singer Percy Sledge dies

Legendary R&B singer Percy Sledge has died at the age of 73, CNN has confirmed.

The crooner, best known for his classic song "When a Man Loves a Woman," passed away Tuesday morning in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

The cause of death was not immediately available.

"Woman" was a massive hit, topping the charts in 1966 and appearing on numerous movie soundtracks.

It was later covered by Michael Bolton, whose 1991 version also hit No. 1.

In 1987, Sledge's original single was reissued and made the top 10 in the UK.

Sledge followed it up with more romantic songs like "Warm and Tender Love" and "It Tears Me Up," and continued to record through the 1990s.

One of the greats gone.  He passed away after a long battle with cancer, I read.  Part of the soundtrack of music I grew up with in the realm of soul.

I was just watching the movie "The Commitments" about the Irish band who performed soul.  One of the funny lines in the movie was:

Steve Clifford: [in confessional] Used to, when I studied I would sing hymns, but now all I can sing is "When A Man Loves A Woman" by Marvin Gaye

Father Molloy: Percy Sledge.

Steve Clifford: What?

Father Molloy: It was Percy Sledge did that particular song. I have the album.

Steve Clifford: Oh...

Sorry if I sound heartless, but at least dying of liver cancer is better and more respectable than dying from Suicide( Robin Williams, Lee Thompson Young) or an accidental drug overdose (Cory Monteith, Heath Ledger).... But, RIP to Percy. It is a sad day in Music History....
My name is Donathan, pronounced the same way you pronounce Jonathan, except with a D.😀 Hitting on a Lesbian who speaks to you and about you like trash means you're REALLY desperate! 😀

WAMLAW was one of the first songs I ever heard when I started listening to music on the radio as a kid.

Something that's been with me most of my life.

RIP Percy.
