I'm really sick of the angle that every insurance company plays up lately. "Oh it's not YOU causing problems, you're perfect, it's all those OTHER filthy animals causing problems". I'm sorry, they're called car accidents for a reason. As in it's an accident. No one was planning on it and no one goes out intending to hit someone or be hit. I guarantee from the time you step into your first car at 16 to the time your family pulls you out in your golden years, you will have gotten into at least one accident. It's inevitable.

Progressive has been pushing their big brother-esque Snapshot product with the angle that "you're a good driver, so show us!". No thanks, the less information my insurance company has on me personally, the better.

People need to stop acting like their perfect. I guarantee if you asked someone how good of a driver they think they are they'll say "above average" or "very good". Hmmm, ok, so if we're all so perfect who are all these "rate suckers"? Show me a statistic that says 1% of all drivers cause 90% of all accidents and then maybe I'll change my tune.

Call me a dirty socialist, but I don't have a big problem with "shared risk" programs like insurance. Some people get in more accidents then others, some people get cancer, some people get welfare and food stamps. Whatever, that's part of living in a society with a bunch of other hairless psychotic apes.

This is one of their few ads that I've liked enough to not fast forward through the first couple of times it came on....  LOL

Quote Progressive has been pushing their big brother-esque Snapshot product with the angle that "you're a good driver, so show us!".

I wonder how many accidents THAT will cause, with people paying more attention to the camera while driving than on the road....

I agree with a lot of your post---but not the first paragraph.  "Accident" doesn't mean no one's at fault.  Intentions don't matter.  No one intends to get into an accident.  Drunk driving, bad brakes, not paying attention, bad weather conditions, running a red light, etc.---someone's still gonna be at fault.  Sometimes, one party is considered 75% at fault, and the other 25%.  Insurances take that into consideration.  So does Judge Judy.

Wait, those snapshot thingies are real? I thought they were just a silly little prop for the commercial.

Personally I think I'm a decent driver and most people around here drive like idiots. Yeah, I know everyone probably thinks that, but I'm motivated by the fear of being hit by some nutjob. I don't even enjoy driving because for every ten cars I see theres some bozo on a phone. It makes me wonder if it was worth the time to make a "hands free law" here since no one seems to obey it. I've literally been driven off of the road by morons too busy yakkin' to pay attention to what they're doing.

Worse yet, the amount of people with NO insurance on their vehicles. Before I began my retirement cycle from the military we had to actually check all of the soldiers car insurance policies. No sh*t, we had to call the insurance companies and have the verify that PVT Snuffy had a policy monthly. (The soldier had to be there of course, to gvie the insurance guy permission to tell us). It was a pain in the butt, took all day when you're talking about a full company of troops (let alone the battalion. It was a battalion wide policy) and kind of insulting. I'd like to say it was fruitless but a surprising number of them didn't have insurance....some faked insurance cards, some just let it lapse....because they spent their money on a 500 dollar sonic boom stereo-annoyance-system instead of insurance.

I don't know how I've gone so long in my city without an accident, knock on wood. Most of the cars around here have a broken windsheld, all but 1 brake light out, straight up NO license plate (how does this happen so much?!), or the driver is leaned back so far you can't even see them anymore. There is no way these people have insurance of any kind and what's suing them going to do? They don't even have enough money to fix the tail light on their 1990 chevy caprice wagon.

d4, I thought the snapshot was just a prop too until I read an article about it. Turns out it's real and it plugs into your OBD II port. Luckily my car is OBD I so it can never tattle on me. It records your speeding, time of day you drive most, acceleration, and braking. Brake hard too many times and it's going to tell Progressive you're a sh*tty driver. What? Why? What if I had to slam on my brakes 3x in a month to avoid hitting another driver? Or a child? It's just as bad as the existing statistics that say negative things about red cars and young male drivers. What's the point? It's still just making gross generalizations.

I'm sure its different now, but back when I first enlisted I was at Ft. Campbell Kentucky. That base straddles the state line into Tennessee and I found out that you didn't have to have insurance in Tennessee! (at least in 1990). It was the same in Rhode Island in the late 80s. I only found that out because a friend of mine got hit by some guy in that state and it wrecked his car. The guy didn't have insurance and as my friend told me "I can't sue him because he doesn't have any money anyway.". Basically my buddy had to replace his car by himself even though he wasn't at fault in the accident.

Progressive had better have some incredibly low rates to convince me to allow them to track me with that stupid thing. I'm talking nearly free.

I could look it up, but if I remember correctly the most you can save from doing their snapshot experiment is 20%, and you can't get penalized for being sh*tty, except now your insurance KNOWS you're a sh*tty driver. But to me that sounds like how every company says you can save x% by switching.

Here, we can't renew the registration on our car without proof of insurance.  Insurance companies automatically transmit that info to the DMV.  Of course, someone can still drop their insurance after registration is completed.

There's so many horrible car insurance ads out there that they need their own separate category on the main page.

Nobody rides for free. THEN they force anyone who watches TV to watch a gazillion ads for an overpriced, intangible product that is required by law.   Fkers.

Often heard on those daytime judge shows...

"Yes, we had insurance but it lapsed two days before the accident".

That means you had no insurance, idiots!

These commercials are loud and annoying as hell.  I also don't want to see people with their mouths looking like leeches.

The big problem with Snapshot is while it collects a good amount of data, it can't collect any context for the data. So if you gently accelerate to 25mph, the Snapshot will think everything is a-ok whether you're doing so in town or on the Interstate. Brisk acceleration to match traffic on a highway could count against you, but leisurely doing 60 in a residential area would be reported as safe driving. Similarly, blowing through a red light would be ok, but stopping quickly to avoid getting snapped by a red-light camera could cost you your supposed "discount".

So Snapshot is just an advertising gimmick with no practical purpose. I am so shocked!

Our idiot Governor signed something very similar a couple weeks ago. It is called a driving permit. I really don't think the illegals will go to DMV. They will continue to stay under the RADAR with no license or insurance.

You do that because you're being a responsible driver by paying attention to the road and its surroundings like they teach in Drivers Ed, yet it's a negative mark on your "safe" driving scorecard.

Meanwhile, there's some asshole talking on his cell phone while shoveling a Big Mac into his mouth, steering with his knee, and doesn't even see a kid in the street who dives out of the way just in time to avoid getting run over, and said asshole cruises along oblivious to everything but himself.  No red flags get sent to the Snapshot device, so clearly he must be the safer driver.

Great freaking logic Progressive!

Or if it was Flo herself as one of the leech people. Christ the lipstick she wears makes her lips look so big she could probably leech onto the side of a 747 and make all the way on a cross country flight without detaching.
