This is a topic where you mention songs that have been overplayed to death.
I'd say one of them is Gimmie Shelter by the Rolling Stones It's a cool song don't get me wrong, it's just been played to death from movie previews (Flight) to shows about press members interviewing terrorists on NBC. |

Under Pressure by David Bowie
God, I can't stand that song anymore, it's lost all it's likableness. Please everybody stop playing this song I can't take it anymore. |

Back in Black
Wal Mart drilled it into the ground last holiday season (and beyond), and have already started up with it again with their layaway bullsh*t. And now, the new Call of Duty game uses it in the commercial for it, because the subtitle of the game is Black Ops 2. Gee, how creative |

Agreed, another good song ruined by being overplayed to death. Just hearing that song puts me into a rage. Party Rock by LMFAO Worst techo-pop song ever, one play is enough, multiple plays is beating a dead horse. |

If we're talking about radio, that and 3 or 4 other top Lynyrd Skynyrd songs. The most over-rated song ever: Stairway To Heaven

"I Love Rock N' Roll" by Joan Jett. That's about the only song of hers they ever play on radio. Too bad, as it makes you sick of the song real quick....
My theory is that radio stations play the same 40 songs over and over because the royalty fee on them is near zero. Apparently even that isn't good enough for the bottom line, as music stations are changing formats to talk shows at an alarming rate....

My disdain for overplayed songs goes back to when I was a kid. I remember being sick of Let's Lock the Door by Jay and the Americans in 1965 and then, a few years later, Jean by Oliver.
Oh, and the Righteous Brothers' You've Lost The Lovin' Feelin'. Not only was it played constantly, it was almost 4 minutes long (which was really long for an AM song in 1964).

Bowie sucked in his "dance-pop" phase in the 80s. Let's Dance was even worse.

...never was a huge ELO fan and I'm a little sick of Jeff Lynne's "Hold On Tight To Your Dreams" being used here and there....

Zerocool listed a lot of good ones, but definitely Don't Stop Believin'. The first time I remember hearing it was on a "Family Guy" episode...that seemed to revive its popularity. It's since been used on "The Sopranos" and "Glee", but it is one song I could go without hearing ever again.
Honestly, Journey is pretty overplayed themselves. Seems they're one of those bands who will pimp out their music to any company who needs it for a commercial (I'm looking at you Any Way You Want It). I've grown to hate their music tremendously as a result. -Come Together by the Beatles is another overplayed one, and I like the Beatles. -So is anything by Adele. -Any indie rock song used for a commercial. Honestly, I'm not a big fan of indie rock to begin with. I can't stand things that are quirky for the sake of being quirky, and indie rock is the epitome of that. Speaking of which... -Pumped Up Kicks...I thought it was catchy at first, then right around the time of the Aurora, CO shootings, I learned what it's really about, and have had a hard time listening to it ever since. Doesn't help that our office's radio (Pandora or Slacker) played the hell out of this song. The good thing is everyone sighs in disgust when it comes on because it's so overplayed, and it gets changed quickly. -We Are Young is another one that's catchy but got old quickly. -I Will Survive...but a lot of the big disco songs of the '70s have cliches for commercials (Turn the Beat Around, I'm Every Woman...some of Donna Summer's stuff...nothing against her).

Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen is well on its way to the Overplayed Hall of Shame. There must be about 3000 versions lip-synched on YouTube alone.

I listen to one particular radio station in my car. Somehow, every time I get in my car, even if it's not my normal commute times, this one staiton is ALWAYS playing Billy Joel. If I switch the station to another standrad I listen to, somehow they always manage to play Tom Petty.

Sometimes, overplayed songs have been overplayed for so long that they become practically invisible. Sometimes, though, I'll give them another listen and start liking them again. Two like that for me are Freebird and Stairway to Heaven.
Then there's the music that was waaaay overplayed in its day, but then I hear it decades later, and I realize it was good stuff. In my car AM radio days of the early 70s, the Philly Soul stuff (like Stoned in Love With You by the Stylistics) was saccharine and relentless. These days, I look forward to hearing that stuff.

Is that the song in that big girl's clothing ad that there's a current thread about? Just a little while ago, I looked that song up. I kinda like it. It surprised me.
This one?

ARRRRGHGHHHH!!!!!! Words cannot adequately describe the violent things I want to do when I hear this woman. All of her songs are insanely annoying and cutesy. I have a secret belief that "artists" like her and the people who push for songs like these to be played are part of a feminist conspiracy to ruin musical palates everywhere. |
