I bought a 40lb box a few weeks ago because I had a Petsmart coupon for $7 off, bringing the price below that of the generic stuff.  I think I paid $7.  It's usually $14, or something like that.  I think the generic stuff is $7.99.

It's got a real fine texture, but it works no better than the cheap more pebble-y stuff.  In fact, the fine granules turn into a thick sticky clay when the cat piss soaks in.  This makes clean-up difficult.  I usually blast the litter box clean with my backyard hose, but with this stuff, it won't budge.  It sticks like glue to the plastic.

I'll stay with the cheap stuff from now on.

I put my cat on this.
Of course I have but 1 cat and she poops once a day. Don't use that shield and scoop the poop out and flush it down the toilet.

I used to use the Feline Pine when I first got my cats in 2002.  Good stuff, but so is the cheap clay stuff.

Then, from 2003 till last year, I didn't even have a litter box set up.  But Sneakers has gotten rickety, and I don't want to force him to go outside if he doesn't want.  And then I got the kittens last December.  Capone's gone now, but Rocco hasn't used the litter box in his bedroom for months.

Our cats use Tidy Cats 24/7.  The odor control is excellent.  Our cats don't step foot outside anymore.

That's what I was using most of this year.  Then, I figured I'd give the Petsmart stuff a try.  It seems just as good, and it's a dollar or two cheaper.

So, do your cats not go outside anymore due to the change of location?

I gave Rocco full 24-hour in-out access starting last week when he turned 1 year.  As far as I can tell, he's just stayed in every night.  I'm not sure he knows yet that he can go out at night.  I'd still rather he didn't, but he's a big boy now.  LOL

We had a pet door attached to an outside enclosure for the cats when we lived in NY.  Here, they have a bigger indoor environment to explore and claim as their own, so we decided to let them just stay indoors.  At least we won't have to worry about a special little one dragging snakes in the house like she used to.LOL

...or rats or live birds or headless pigeons, as mine have.

Right now, we have 3 escaped white bunny rabbits in the 'hood.  They look like something right off the front of an Easter card.  I worry about an encounter between the cats and the rabbits.  I understand they can be an equal match.  So far, so good, though.  The cats don't seem to even wanna approach them.

^  I just looked at the Walmart website.  Yup.  $3.38 for 25 lbs.  I'll have to check that out next time I need to buy.  Seeing as how Sneakers is the only cat that uses it, and seeing as how his time is limited, I always hope there's actually gonna be a "next time".

Thanks.

If you only have one cat using it & he's that far along, you ought to just get it at the Dollar Tree.
That's what I'm doing these days.

I don't think he's quite that far along.  He still manages to travel about the 'hood (within a few houses) and stalk Mal.  He's actually been maintaining at his current level for the past year or so.  He even had one of those cat bursts-of-energy yesterday---y'know, when they start tear-assing around for no apparent reason.  But ya just never know.

Oh...one thing that changed about 6 months ago, is that he stopped climbing the stairs.

Still, with just one cat using the box, a small bag will last a long time.

Unless you dump ot completely out every time you clean it.

If you just scoop the poop the scrape the clumped stuff off the bottom then add some fresh stuff, a small bag can last a fair while.

A 40lb bag is good for about 6 weeks/6 changes.  I just dump the entire contents, clean it and refill it every week.

Sneaks needs a big litter box, as sometimes he'll stand in it, but his butt hangs over the side.  This means I often have to wash the throw rug underneath it, as well.  Plus, there's usually wet crap stuck to the inner walls of the box.  This is why I just dump it all and clean it every week.

Some people are really grossed out by having to clean litter boxes.  Not me.  Having dealt with Sneakers' brand of mess for so long, no other cat mess can gross me out.  When the kittens were using their litter box, it was practically a pleasure to clean.  LOL

I don't get any newspapers.  Besides, Sneakers' wet crap would just soak through to the white carpet underneath it all.

Plus, I have some ratty old throw rugs that are just hanging out with nothing better to do, so why not put 'em to work?

Oh come on, you tellin me you don't get local ads & flyers & whatnot printed on newsprint paper delivered in the mail that you just chuck in the trash, or that there aren't a couple of free local-rag newspaper dispenser machines outside the entrance to the Dollar Tree or some such place, where you could grab a stack of them whenever you need to so that you won't have to rinse dried cat diahrea out of a rug every couple of days???

Seriously?? You can't find a free publication printed on newsprint paper anywhere you go on a regular basis??

Hell, I'd spend the 35 cents to buy a paper once a week or so just to keep from having to experience that kind of "joy".

Wait a minute.... did you say you keep the litter box on the white carpet????

No utilty room or garage with a bare concrete floor???

Yikes!!!

I'm fine with my throw rug method, Jimbo.  LOL

But, no...my downstairs has only three rooms.  And I don't want the litter box in the kitchen or even the tiny little unventilated bathroom.  Nor do I want to make Sneakers go out to the garage to do his stuff.  His life, at this point, is about ease.  Besides, I'm not sure he would do it.  Yesterday, while I was outside cleaning his litter box, he went and crapped on the throw rug where his box normally is.  What a guy!

I've been using Shweatscoop (ground up wheat husks) for years now and it's the best I've ever used.  Totally natural, no scent, low dust and it does harden up that pee really well.  LOL

When I started using this I stopped putting my dirty litter in the trash to go do the dump.  I have a huge pasture that isn't used for anything and I can dump it (at the back), cover it and it gradually goes back into the soil.

You can find $1 off coupons regularly in Cat Fancy and Organic Gardening and they have a program that after every 14 bags you send in proof of purchas from bags and get coupon for free bag.  They've been doing this for years so I get one fairly often what with having multiple cats.

A new study finds that people who are chipper & happy live longer. Which is surprising because people who aren't chipper & happy want to kill people who are always chipper & happy. David Letterman

^^ So how much does it cost per bag, & how big is the bag weight-wise?

Looks to be about $28 for a 40lb bag.  That's at Petco, and on sale.

I used to pay $15 for a 40lb bag of Feline Pine.
