Something I'd like to know about the Duracell commercials of my childhood (the 80s and early 90s): how did they get that "copper top" to swing around in time to the "DUR-A-CELL" flash/jingle, and subsequently to slam into the black part of the battery with the Duracell label and make the crashing motion?

That's what I thought it was! I remember seeing those ubiquitously throughout my youth. They did something similar on ABC's Star Tunnel movie opening: the three parts of the title would flash one-by-one, top-to-bottom, and then the whole title would flash.

They had computer generated animation even way back then.

Not as sophisticated as today, but they could do it.

HBO had a "Feature Presentation" intro they were using back in the early 80's that was partially computer generated.
