The scent of stupidity..."...think of it as being in the best interest of (haHA!) 'medical science'"

Now, here is something VERY disturbing...for all our California members, I hope you are not affected in any way, by this...one would think a SIMPLE background check would have brought this to light...there simply cannot be a valid excuse.

There is just too damned much of this going on. Between this crap and gun violence in schools . . . .  As someone who's been traumatized by guns several times, it does nasty things to my head.

1. At age 19, I was working at a drugstore, at the cigarette counter in the front, and out of sight of the manager. I was held up at gunpoint. (1974)

2. When I was pregnant, my boss committed suicide at work. Luckily, I was out having a sonogram done (it was first thing in the morning), but there was a lot of other stuff going on in my life at the time, and that put me into pre-term labor. (1986)

3. I was trapped in a high-rise at work downtown when a gunman went into one of the other offices and killed 8 people. We were trapped for 5 hours, not knowing whether he had an accomplish running around. The SWAT team crept in and got us, although that, by itself, nearly gave us coronaries. (1993)

I experience some sort of PTSD when stuff like this happens; it brings it all back.

Who needs bombs?  Who needs guns?  In the SF Chron yesterday, there was a story about a 7 y/o in Oakland who had his teeth broken and skull fractured at school Monday by 5th grade "bullies".  This elementary school has a history of violence.  Last year, they suspended 97 out of 344 students for violence (some of which did involve weapons).

When I googled this story, I came across an article in the NY Times from a year ago which talked about the violence in this school (which is located in a nice area of Oakland, but kids are bussed in).  In all their infinite wisdom, the school decided that "Tibetan singing bowls" might help.  The article actually actually took this crap seriously.

Excerpt:
OAKLAND, Calif., June 12 — The lesson began with the striking of a Tibetan singing bowl to induce mindful awareness.  With the sound of their new school bell, the fifth graders at Piedmont Avenue Elementary School here closed their eyes and focused on their breathing, as they tried to imagine “loving kindness” on the playground.

"Kum-bay-ah...."

I know. I was "bowled" over by the percentage of kids (97 out of 344 students?!) who were suspended for violence. And another teacher commented that they don't always suspend the kids because they have to "keep their numbers down."  There is a lot of that kind of stuff going on in the schools (keeping the numbers down) as far as drop-outs, etc. I'm trying so hard not to feel hopeless, but lately I just feel like the fabric of society is unraveling at a dizzying speed.

"Where are we going? And why am I in this handbasket?"

Friend of mine who teaches in the SFUSD says that the rougher schools in SF don't suspend their students because an individual school's funding in the SFUSD is dependent upon the attendance rate of that school's students.  A "suspension" is considered an absence.  It actually behooves the school to look the other way when a student commits a suspendable offense.

You're right, Thor.  I am just thankful that my son was able to go to the School of the Arts (vocalist). It was very small and gay-friendly. And I'm glad as hell he's out of the SFUSD, too.
