As many of you know I was on a forced hiatus for months mostly due to a computer failure.  My old computer was five years old and many museums were wanting it (actually it got a Trojan and virus in it). It was slow, slow, slow, and a pain to use. From there began my months-long oddessy. I called our cable company and asked them to hook up the new speedy cable (sans dialup) to my wife's laptop and figured that we would get by with just that.  Well my three year old daughter proceeded to pull all the keys off the laptop and lost 2/3 of them before the tech arrived. The tech tried for an hour to connect but was unsuccessful.  I called the computer company to buy new keys and was told that I had to pay to have the laptop interior cleaned before buying a new keyboard and paying to have it installed (his English was terrible).  Meanwhile the Best Buy associate told me that it would cost $200 to clean the viruses from my PC and keep all old files intact.  He did the work order and told me I had to pay in advance (pay day was two days away) so I had to decline.  I took my PC home and received an automated message the next day that my PC was ready to pick up (odd considering that I never dropped it off). When payday arrived I was short of money again, so no PC fix. For months I went without a computer (except occasionally at work) wishing that my bills were not so high so I could afford the fix.  Finally I walked into Best Buy with the money and PC in hand.  This time they revealed that it would be better to buy a new Compaq PC for almost the price of fixing my outdated relic. I bought a new computer, hooked it up and called the Knology to get me online.  I was then informed that it would be an entire week before this was possible. The next day I called them back and found that a cancellation had allowed me to be online in two days instead of two (was my luck finally changing?) I was working night shift, so Wednesday at noon while sleeping peacefully, I was awakened by Knology at my door. My appointment was at 1PM and my wife was supposed to be home then to let the tech in, but she was running errands and neither of us expected them to appear an hour early.  The PC was put online and was a dream come true (soon to be a true nightmare).  Two days later I used a thumb drive (that Best Buy had checked for viruses) in the new PC and it went haywire.  Nothing would respond, so I took it back to Best Buy to be checked for viruses.  It came back clean so I took it home and hooked it up. Then I discovered that Besy Buy had not checked to see if it would log on the internet.  Well what do you know?  It would not log on the internet! My wife took it back again and waited two hours while the techs found that they did not know what was wrong with it.  She came home and I had to take the entire PC back to get a different one.  My run of bad luck held out and they did not have any more of the model I bought so I had to pay extra for a slightly different model and wait another day for Best Buy to install the software that I had bought for the first one.  My wife picked up the new PC and I hooked it up.  The internet came on easily and quickly and I then knew that I had beaten the cyber-jinx that I had been doing battle with for months. Then I discovered that the keyboard would not work.  I looked in the computer (using a mouse) and found no software had been installed for the keyboard.  So I went back to Best Buy (where they now knew me well) and had them test for the problem. After a few minutes the tech told me that the keyboard worked fine for him.  After looking at him in disbelief I returned home and once again hooked up the new PC.  And what do you know?  Everything worked fine and a new program for keyboard use had mysteriously "appeared" in the PC!  So here I am and I have a new understanding of the patience of Job!
