Oh yeah I see you have some cracks in the foundation down here yeah we're gonna have to tear the whole floor out and dig all the plumbing out and put in new piping and new soil that's gonna cost you about a hundred thousand right there easy yeah then we'll have to put in a new filter to keep the water out and spray the whole ground with pesticide and of course then we gotta put in new concrete and reseal the walls that's another couple hunnerd grand then wait you know what we're gonna have to redo the entire ground underneath here yeah we gotta put new dirt in the ground all the way through the earth's crust to the mantle yeah that's another million right there no wait on second thought you know what we're gonna have to go back in time to about a million BC before the earth started to cool and reinforce the entire earth's crust around that area put in some state of the art dirt and mud and steel and piping and soil and concrete and we need to build a time machine to do that so that's gonna cost oh about a trillion dollars on top of all that oh you're thinking about it OK why don't I give you my card and we'll talk about it when you're ready oh you're showing me the upstairs now oh you're showing me the front door now OK we gotta replace the paneling and the frame and the walls and repaint it and oh you're picking me up by my trousers sir are you trying to throw me or something OW well OK I'll just leave my card here sir you think about it and let me know or I'll come back tomorrow and we can break it down a little bit for ya ... SLAM!

They let slip during one This Old House remodel that the house belonged to someone who was related to a PBS exec.  Of course, TOH was paying for the remodel, which got into big bucks for lots of fancy stuff.  The show long ago got away from DIY and became "pay the contractor".  Not even sure if it is on anymore...

You jest, but most of the time when the homeowner is told about a huge expense, they just get this look on their faces like a deer caught in the headlights and nod their heads.  I can't believe what some of the contractors on the HGTV programs charge.  Why in the world does it cost  $2,000 to take down an interior wall that's not loadbearing??Confused

HGTV (Canada) has Mike Holmes showing how to do it RIGHT (been doing it for HGTV for 15 years). *I* really like the guy - straight shooter, EXCELLENT work. Can't get his shows unless I'm back at The Den in The Great White North...if The Den had any issues, I'd find Holmes and somehow come up with the funds...
